E3 '10: League Of Legends Season One

League of Legends Art

Riot Games' League of Legends announcement this year included that they will be releasing Season One, which hopes to accomplish a number of things. First is to hopefully make the game more newbie friendly by breaking up the game into ranked and more casual matches. A level twenty character will be required to jump into ranking matches, so there is little worry that someone completely new to the game will bork a match.

This will all come with a complete redesign of the PVP.net game screen, which should hopefully be designed for a more intuitive feel for players (including making the 'Play' button more visible). The ranked matches come in a variety of flavors: 3v3, 5v5, and then premade teams, with ranking available for each; rankings themselves will be based on a win/loss ratio.

Also made available will be draft mode, whereby you select your champion in an alternating pattern. Included in this is the ability to ban certain characters, selected by the team leader of the respective teams. You also choose the champions' abilities in this screen, which is not set until everyone's made their decisions (so as not to lock anyone out in this choice-by-choice selection).

News on maps was that there will be more available, but that is not the immediate concern. As they are launching in Asia soon, they are more worried about making sure the experience for these ranked matches are well in place and understood, so want to use maps with which people are familiar. They don't want to throw too much at a player from the start.

LoL's intent seems to be on becoming a premier e-sport, and they hope to use this to also host competitions, award prizes, and launch into more options for players in how they play.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
