Cheap (Group) Date: Many Steam Games 25-90% Off

As summer's longest days set in and minds start to turn to vacations and lounging on the sand, one entity is making a stand for your safety. For example, did you know that there have been more than 2,251 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide? Valve does, and they want you to know it to, in the hopes that you'll also know it's safer just to stay inside and play games on Steam.

To make your life that much safer, they're hosting the Perils of Summer Sale, which goes through July 4 and features the widest-cast net of deals since that one huge sale last holiday season. To wit, many entire catalogs of one publishers' titles or another can be had for 50% off or more. For one, the THQ Complete Pack gives you some excellent strategy titles in Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40k--with all their expansions, of course--as well as the Red Faction collection, Titan Quest, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., and the newly-released Metro 2033, all for $49.99.

Or how about all of 2K Games' Steam games, including Borderlands and its DLC packs, both Bioshocks, a lot of X-COM and every Civilization game on Steam at $89.99? That's 75% off their current sale prices, as it happens. There are also a heap of good à la carte sales, such as everything by Atari being 66% off: an excellent idea if you want to try a month of Star Trek Online or Champions Online on the cheap. You can also acquire Quantic Dreams' earlier game, Indigo Prophecy, for $3.39.

If you prefer to shop by genre than by publisher, Steam has your back there, too. The RPG side includes the well-reviewed Mount & Blade: Warband and my beloved Torchlight for half-price. If you're more of an indie fan, you can check out And Yet It Moves, Machinarium, Beat Hazard, Trine, Zeno Clash, and Altitude for between 50% and 80% off--most below $8.

However your tastes tend to run, there's likely to be at least one game on sale here about which you've been on the fence, and Steam implores you to make the plunge so you're less tempted to spend your time around sharks. It's for your own safety.
