Steam Comes To The Mac

steam-logo.jpg

Fantastic news for Mac gamers comes to day from Steam. As of April, Steam will be bringing its digital download service and Valve's library of games (Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series and more) to the Apple platform. Steamworks will allow Mac players to access all of Steam's APIs as well as a new feature, Steam Play, which will allow a purchaser to play their games on both platforms if desired for only one price.

While the back catalog of Valve titles will become available for the Mac platform, Portal 2 will be the first game to be released on both the PC and Mac platforms at the same time. Moving forward, all games produced by Valve will be available the same way.

This is terrific news for all of you Mac folks who have felt left out of the PC gaming scene. Being a Mac user myself, I am particularly excited by this prospect. While I'm not much of a keyboard and mouse gamer, this could well be the thing that tips the scale to the other side for me. We shall see!

Woohoo! finally Apple gets serious about courting developers. I hope these are truly native apps and not windows apps inside a wine emulation wrapper. The latter means slow apps with all the instability problems of a pc.

I hope this is the first step toward bringing Steam to Linux. (A guy can hope.)

Steam has gotten me back into gaming on the PC, although I lean toward the casual side there. I've never personally had DRM issues with Steam, nor installation issues. And, at this point in my life, it's real easy to throw down for any game under 10 bucks during the weekend deals which looks remotely interesting.

It'll be real interesting to see how the Macs perform for gaming. I've seen snide comments elsewhere, but have to think that a properly coded game (something that Valve or ID would do) would fly on the few Mac configurations as opposed to the myriad PC configurations, with the bonus that Mac system overhead is still reasonable, whereas Windows has just gotten fatter as PCs have gotten faster.

To be a noble benign being is to have a philanthropic of openness to the in the seventh heaven, an cleverness to trust uncertain things beyond your own control, that can front you to be shattered in very extreme circumstances as which you were not to blame. That says something uncommonly impressive about the get of the honest autobiography: that it is based on a trustworthiness in the unpredictable and on a willingness to be exposed; it's based on being more like a plant than like a prize, something somewhat dainty, but whose very particular attraction is inseparable from that fragility.
