GameStop Expects Wii, PS3 Shortages To Last Months

After a few months of record sales, it looks like a couple of the console makers are having trouble resupplying stocks of their consoles. Talking to investors, GameStop's executive VP of merchandising, Tony Bartel, said that they expect PS3 shortages for another couple of months. As for the Wii, he expects Nintendo to boost supplies of their console before Sony, but still not for at least a few more weeks. In both cases, he claims that GameStop could be selling "a lot more hardware than what we have on both the PS3 and Wii platform." The shortages are blamed on an "unprecedented" holiday season for both companies, but is also likely due to price drops, as well as the introduction of the PS3 Slim late last year.
With a slew of high profile games just released, and commercials running all over TV, this is a particularly bad time for Sony to be short on console stock. I mean frothing demand is all well and good, but will potential God of War III players wait until nearly summer to get their hands on Kratos? Someone needs to tell Sony and Nintendo that shortages are so 2007.
