Video: Metroid: Other M Japanese Web Teaser
Nintendo has launched the official website for Metroid: Other M at least the Japanese one although there's not a whole lot there besides this tease. Not so much a trailer as simply the flash animation that plays when you visit the site, it's still an intriguing tease. (And Game Trailers helpfully translated the tiny bit of dialogue.)
Instead of gangbusters action, they almost seem to be going for atmosphere with the lilting piano and somber imagery. Personally, they've got my attention... how about you?

Yeah I'm worried! The game will probably kick ass but one of the things I love about the Metroid Franchise is that there's no character development. I find it refreshing compared to games like the FF series or resident evil where the game is so over dramatic. I find it interesting how the story unfolds but yet we never learn much details on Samus. Watch it kick total ass here's hoping!
I share your fears D-lite. I liked how Metroid Prime 3 started to give a wider view of the galactic federation and the universe outside of Samus' isolated bounty hunter life, but it did so without revealing too much about her.
What I find interesting though is that I have the exact opposite reaction to the Halo series. It's a similar situation, with a heavily armed character hidden behind bulky armor and a helmet, yet I want less character development from Samus and more from Master Chief. Perhaps it's because Master Chief talks, and when he talks he doesn't necessarily say the things I would say or with the temperment I would have, so he becomes more of his own character. Samus, on the other hand, may nod her head in agreement when told to go on a mission, but we are never told if she is an obedient soldier type or sassy and sarcastic, or any other personality traits, so I am allowed to put my own personality into the character.
I guess what I'm getting at is that if they're going to flesh out Samus as a character in Metroid: Other M, then they had better go all out and really develop her character. I either want in-depth character development or none at all, because the middle ground doesn't create interesting enough characters. And I hope it isn't as over-dramatic as the teaser makes it seem. Please don't let there be any long Final Fantasy style monologues. What I wouldn't give for some videogame dialog that seemed like an actual conversation rather than a scene from a play.
@Navi: Ellis from TF2. :p
I love the way that the story was presented in Prime, it felt "right" with the environment and feeling that they were trying to present. I also really liked Zero Mission, because it took a lot of the information that we have gleaned from outside of the titles to present Samus' origin. having said that, if they opt to further explore Samus' story, I hope that they keep the storytelling simple.
also, please do not give Samus a voice actor; the scream when you die is plenty, thanks. I can read (and generally play games with the subtitles on anyways because for some reason most developers cannot balance the voice acting against the other sound effects....) further, I think most of us have attached how she would sound to the character in our heads.
They lost me at "Team Ninja". Never played a game from them that I've enjoyed.
"Atmosphere with the lilting piano and somber imagery" were the last things I expected from a teaser for a Team Ninja game, which makes this video a very pleasant surprise for me. Maybe with new leadership the team will be able to take itself slightly seriously and make something more than just a giggle-fest.
