Square Cut A Full Game's Worth Of Content From FFXIII

Square's epic RPGs have always been long, winding, grandiose affairs-- I remember the multiple discs necessary for FF7 and getting word that FFXIII will run on three DVDs, a format that would've held the data for FF7 a few times over with space to spare.
When you consider that last detail it's shocking to learn that apparently Square cut enough content from FFXIII, for game balance and and space, to create another new game with it.
That's the detail revealed and summarized from a Japanese interview with Isamu Kamikokuryou, FFXIII's art director, discussing deleted areas of the game.
Such locations apparently included a base for Snow's hero squad, a zoo and a character's house that included a park.
This stuff was inside an unreleased build of the upcoming game but were cut from the official version of the RPG. We've heard a lot about FFXIII lately, and it's a little scary to know how much girth the RPG had going for it before it met the editor.

FF13 DLC COMING SOON!
@Bearfamily: Yep, my exact thoughts.
In a "way" I guess this happens to a lot of games, things just end up not making the cut. So DLC is a way for them to take ideas and bring the good ones back into the game after release.
But I dont like the idea of withholding stuff that should have been in there just to make some $$$ off the DLC now made more attractive by good features that would have made the actual game much fuller.
At the same time, if it's material that isn't essential and makes a tighter project, I'm all for it. Depends on how the story goes, and how the DLC plays into that.
I am not that surprised, it seems that around number 12 the Final Fantasy series has gotten more obsessed with graphics over story, style over substance, good looks over a brain. So yeah I will probably not be buying this game due to all the videos I have seen have been about mostly the looks or sounds of the game rather then the plot which without a plot, might as well just be a platform-er.
Hey, there are some pretty epic stories in platformers! Just look at Cave Story.
It's sad that they cut so much out of a game whose very name used to mean "ungodly hours of gameplay," but I'm glad they buckled under and did it. It's already been way too long since FFXII, and everything I've heard is that the XIII team was getting flack from their bosses for taking so long on the game - that's part of why they showed off the trailer for the next Final Fantasy last E3.
At this point I'd rather just have the game here. They can add some more story (and dress spheres!) when they release FFXIII-2.
I think it's funny you say that Noa, because not only is this the first Final Fantasy SINCE XII, but I think most reviews of XII agreed that while it looked beautiful (for a PS2 game) it still had a great deal of depth, character development, and a fairly good story (that seemingly seemed to avoid a lot of the pitfalls of the last few games in the series, I'm looking at you Tidus' origin from X). Now if you wanted to say that VIII, IX or X went for style over substance (even though X's my favorite) I might agree with you more.
VIII definitely went for graphics over plot. Worst characters, worst storyline, and the only good character, Edea, a villain, lasts for only one disc. And then she leaves your party after ten minutes. wtf.
I'm glad they've experimented with gameplay since FFVII, but it doesn't always work out. FFXII got plain lazy once you get enough gambits, I never had to enter a menu after level 25.
I'm not sure how this game works, but I think I like it. The plot looks a bit sugary though.
It's not really surprising. Game content gets cut all the time. I'm sure some of it will show up as DLC, which isn't a terrible thing. I like seeing extra content, but if it legitimately doesn't fit into the story, than that's fine.
But it might just remain dead content.
VIII had great plot and characters. But you're welcome to your opinion. Even though it's completely wrong. :P
