Ubisoft Plans 10 Games For Natal, 4-5 For PS3's Motion Controller

Both Microsoft's Project Natal and Sony's PS3 motion controller are set for release next year. I don't know about any of you, but I'm a little worried about the lack of actual games announced that will use either device. At least some insight into what those games might be comes from an Ubisoft financial earnings call this morning. Ubisoft helped kick off the Wii's waggle launch with the fan favorite Rayman Raving Rabbids and the less impressive Red Steel, so it is to be expected that the company would be supporting both motion devices at launch. But how much support?

Quite a lot actually. "Around 10 games" are currently planned for the first 6 months after Natal is unleashed on the world, according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, with the more modest number of four to five games planned for PS3 waggle. Any idea of what these motion controlled games are? Not exactly, but Guillemot did give hints at what they aren't.

When asked if the newly announced Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands would be among the games Guillemot replied that Ubisoft "didn't count the games that are supporting the new functions that those accessories will bring." This means that the 10 Natal and 4-5 PS3 games require motion control, while games that may use, but not require, motion control may add to that number. In fact, the Natal and PS3 motion games are referred to as "70% new property," so don't expect many of Ubisoft's more established franchises to be included in that number.

Does this mean that Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will have some form of motion control option? It sure seems like Ubisoft is hinting in that direction. It's reassuring to know that Ubisoft has so many Xbox 360 and PS3 games planned that will make motion control an integral part of gameplay, though the mystery that still surrounds those games is worrisome. Hopefully more details will be revealed early next year after the holiday buying season has died down.

I can't wait to see what MS and Sony's new tech is like. There seems to be quite a buzz around Natal and many devs are keen on it from what I can tell. It looks like they are going to 1-up Nintendo and Sony at the moment. Exciting!
