Transformers: War For Cybertron Details Revealed

NaviFairy alerted us to its existence and offered up a trailer, but now Activision has revealed some actual information about the newest game in the Transformers franchise, Transformers: War for Cybertron. In development by High Moon Studios, this prequel will be set on the Tranformers' home planet Cybertron to explore the civil war that originally pit the Autobots against the Decepticons.

"Transformers: War for Cybertron is an origins story, taking players on a gripping, adrenaline-fueled journey that precedes the TRANSFORMERS characters' arrival on Earth," said Rob Kostich, head of marketing, licensed products, Activision Publishing, Inc. "The game transports players to a living, metallic planet where they will battle as giant converting robots in single player, online co-op or head-to-head multiplayer matches that are fully immersive from start to finish."
"For the first time, Hasbro is working with Activision to drive the TRANSFORMERS fiction forward into new story arcs, demonstrating pivotal moments in Transformers history that defined who they are," said Aaron Archer, Senior Design Director, Hasbro. "This remarkable video game helps us to tell a critical event in TRANSFORMERS lore that will be used as canon for future storylines in a way we could have only dreamed of a few years ago. It is a testament to the success of the TRANSFORMERS brand and a key element to the story we look forward to telling in 2010 and beyond."

Transformers: War for Cybertron will feature two distinct stories. The Autobot campaign follows their quest to save their home planet, and the Decepticon story lets you try to take over the universe. And for the first time in a Transformers title, gamers will be able to play with friends through team-based online co-op or go head to head in a variety of online multiplayer game modes. Activision promises a sci-fi art stile with all-new visualizations of the iconic Transformers in their original Cybertronian forms. That has me a bit worried. While I'm glad it's not going to be based on the movie, I fear that attempting brand new looks for everyone might be too far in the other direction. I guess as long as they're still relatively recognizable, it'll be okay! The game has no release date yet, but is due out eventually for the Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC, Wii and DS.

Both Amazon and Gamestop has it's release for June 22. However, both always tend to jump the gun, as both has World of Warcraft: Cataclysm up for pre-order as well.

I'm looking forward to this. Hopefully it'll do the franchise justice, unlike those movies.
I wonder which canon they're talking about though. What is canon nowadays for Transformers? Between the cartoons and comics, it seems like there are a dozen diferent Transformer continuities around.

It sounds like Total Annihilation given a Transformers paint job.

Just so long as they don't sport that "random sharp metal everywhere" design aesthetic that blighted the live action movies, I'll give it a shot.
