Love Goes Freeish Until Upcoming Beta

love.jpg

Love, the upcoming indie MMOG being developed by Eskil Steenberg, recently went temporarily free-to-play while still in its alpha. The title, as you may recall, generated some controversy when Eskil asked for players interested in accessing the alpha to pay €3 for thirty-days of access a pop; even though this move was a bit unprecedented, the MMOG is under development entirely by Eskil and he used the subscriptions to gauge the level of interest and the number of servers he had to purchase to support those players.

At any rate, with an update on his twitter feed on the 12th of December, he announced that for now the alpha would be free since he can't guarantee the level of service at the moment.

From now until the beta launches at some indeterminate time in the future, the timer has been flipped off and all gameplay is free past that initial €3 purchase. Eskil has been busy updating the game and patching a lot of its initial issues; he has an undisclosed list of 26 items that he has been teasing on twitter for the last few weeks. This is the big checklist of stuff that he wants to have implemented at the start of the beta to usher in the next big iteration of Love. Strange things like "Gen prisons" and "Armageddon" have been ticked off, though the most exiting teaser is that sound will be coming to the game before too long.

It's yet another opportunity to check out this ambitious game early, and as I said previously, I think the cost of admission is well worth it.

I really tried the alpha and I really wanted to Love Love. The idea of a cooperative building game tickles the co-opter in me. I failed to "get it" though and the art style, while great in screenshots, was hard to look at in actual gameplay. I hope the beta has the visual and gameplay improvements.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
