Final Fantasy XIV To 'Rival' WoW

Final Fantasy XIV.jpg

If you are a stockholm syndrome captive of the Final Fantasy series like I am, right now the last thing you want to hear about is how well Final Fantasy XIII is doing in Japan while you have to wait a number of months for it to be released elsewhere. Luckily, Square Enix decided that one Final Fantasy game on the horizon is not enough, so we can all revel in the fact that, like us, Japan also doesn't have Final Fantasy XIV, the MMO sequel to the popular Final Fantasy XI, yet either.

On that note let's give you some goodies for the upcoming MMORPG. As NaviFairy let us know earlier in the week, they have already opened up the signup for beta testers that want to help test the Windows version of Final Fantasy XIV. On top of that, there was also an interview given this week by Square Enix president Yoichi Wada about his positive outlook on the MMO sequel. He noted that the task they are up to is a very big one indeed, since there has yet to be a sequel to a popular MMO that has done better than its predecessor.

"WoW is a tough competitor, but whether you are talking about EverQuest, Ultima or Lineage there has never been a company that has a continuously successful number one and two MMO."

As far as to why he thinks that FFXIV has a chance of overpowering WoW, the had this to say, "yes, but the flipside is that they are a tough competition." Also in the interview he noted that they will be adding micro-transactions to the game to allow users to enjoy the additions that such transactions can add to the MMO experience (and to the company's pocketbooks).

They've also released a number of new screenshots, the ones below, and info about some of the playable classes that will be available in the sequel on the official website. The signup for the beta is also there too.

Final Fantasy XIV a serious WoW rival, says Wada [develop]

Doubt it, I did not really like the first Final Fantasy MMO so I doubt I will be returning for the 'second'. I do know though that to rival WoW you not only need a good game but numbers, mostly the number of people and cash spent on getting/paying to play the game.

It is kind of sad actually, after FF Nine and Ten, the series seemingly went downwards, caring more about looks and graphics then about making the story and plot of the games. So for me vote of future MMO's rivaling WoW?...I would go with (SW)TOR.

Dear Square,

If you really want to outdo WoW, you need to be OS X compatible. Yes, this matters. People who run Macs *actually pay for stuff*, and you will be the Big Fish in the Little Pond.

Trust me. It's part of what makes Blizzard successful, they just don't tell anyone about it.

Unless they make things much less mysterious and MUCH more solo-friendly, I probably won't even give it a try. I've already learned my lesson from FFXI.

I'm with SZK.
The only way I'm touching this is if they make it properly solo-able.
Which is a huge part of why WoW is a success anyway.

This past summer, I played FFXI using their 2 week free trial offer. I think FFXI is a really pretty game (an aesthetic I vastly prefer over WoW's), but gameplay totally isn't newbie friendly especially if you pick the wrong server/nation combination (I'm lookin' at you, Bastok!).

I'm hoping Squeenix learned from their mistakes because I think FFXIV looks very pretty too.

Not happening, considering FFXIV won't even have PvP.

Not that WoW's PvP is well-managed, and that's why it is mainly a PvE game. However, it has the PvP option for the audience that seeks it, and it doesn't shun casuals in its design.
