Assassin's Creed II Selling Better Than The First

Who says there's no room today for a Renaissance man?
Certainly not the fans of Assassin's Creed, since the second game is already said to be shattering sales records based on Ubisoft's internal data. So far we've only heard about the first week's numbers: 1.6 million units sold globally. Considering the first game took away a healthy 8 million in sales over its lifetime, Assassin's Creed II is definitely looking much stronger out of the gate.
Ubisoft did take somewhat of a risk in creating a new IP two years ago, and reviews and player opinion ended up heavily mixed over whether the game's fluid motion and open-world gameplay were enough to outshine its flaws. Still, the fact that it managed to sell such a huge number is likely a testament to the gamers' desire to see some unique gameplay in richly historical settings. To hear tell from the latest reviews, the second game definitely isn't disappointing in that regard.
Still, it could just be the fact that the die-hard Assassin's Creed fans picked up the game in the first week in droves, so these sales aren't necessarily indicative of long-term success for the franchise. We'll have to wait and see!

Take the early reviews with a huge grain of salt. Ubisoft only gave copies of the game to reviewers that could "guarantee" a good score, so many of those first reviews that came out before or around the time of the game's launch may be hugely biased. Reviews coming out now, like Destructoid's, are a LOT more negative of this game.
Once bitten twice shy, the first Assassin's Creed was awful so I wont be wasting my money this time round.
Just want to put this out there: the game's awesome. I have no idea what made Ubisoft think they had to cut deals with critics to get good review scores, because it probably would have gotten them anyway.
NO MORE HOUR GLASS TIMED Stages!!!! :) I really disliked that about Hour Glass.
The first Assassin's Creed bored me after a while (so much repetition, ugh) so I never finished playing it myself (though watched most of the story as my friend played through it).
Everything I didn't like about it has been removed from the sequel, which I bought on a whim the day after release. AC2 is amazing so far, I can't put it down, everything that I actually liked about the first one is still here - and mostly improved on. And everything they've brought new to the game has been great. The story is engrossing, oh, and Ezio is damn fine. ;)
I haven't enjoyed or been immersed in a game like this in a very long time, it's a nice feeling. :)
Given that the lowest score listed on metacritic or gamerankings is 80% I have to assume that the Destructoid review is an outlier. Personally I enjoyed the hell out of this game.
