Rumorama: New DSi Will Be Big In Japan
Hardware revisions abound!
Both Kotaku and GamesIndustry.biz are reporting on a story by the (presumably reliable and clairvoyant) Japanese newspaper Nikkei Shimbun, stating that Nintendo believes there just aren't enough iterations of their portable game systems in the world, and they intend to rectify that by releasing a new model of DSi by the end of this fiscal year.
The implications are that it will cost the same as the current DSi, and that the only new feature will be a screen that's 18.75% larger, measuring in at four bright and colorful inches.
They say bigger is always better, but one has to wonder how many incremental upgrades can be made to a system before the accessories or repair bills start to make it untenable to keep splintering the consumer base. Depending on who you ask, the original Game Boy saw between three and five versions including the good ol' grey brick model, but that was over the course of about nine years.
Personally, aside from the ability to bounce around the screen in The World Ends With You using a larger avatar, the most fun I plan to have from this announcement is seeing Google's automatic translation of the magazine article note that Apple and Sony handhelds in the U.S. are "catching up fierce."
