Hands On: Xbox 360 System Update

So I still haven't gotten the E-mail from Microsoft telling me that the preview of the new Xbox 360 system update was available, but last night when I went to play Lips, it updated and I was able to explore the new features. I wanted to offer up my impressions of them, but I have to be up front about it and admit that I'm really only going to talk about Facebook and Last.fm. I've never quite understood the appeal of Twitter and thus have never gone near it, and I didn't bother signing up for the Zune Marketplace, because I don't really feel the need to purchase music and video on my Xbox since I have an iPod, and I use Netflix for my video watching. Maybe one of my compatriots here can enlighten us on Twitter or the Zune Marketplace. But my impressions after the jump!
That said, I was interested in seeing how Facebook would work on the 360. The layout is awkward, but workable, though it does kind of show that the sliding rows of small boxes isn't really that intuitive of a layout more often than not. The real issue I had was that you can slide side to side and read your friends' status updates and news feed items, but if there are comments, you can only see the first line of the comment. You have to actually click on the comment to open a new window to read the whole comment. Which means that you have to press B to go back to the original post in order to move down to the next comment. And if that's more than one line, you'll have to go through the whole process again. Annoying. Photos look pretty good, even blown up onto your big screen HDTV, although they're obviously not high quality. But if somebody's posted a wall photo on their news feed, you can't actually view the photo full-screen from that post. You'll have to go into their photo album.
Naturally, Facebook doesn't allow you to view videos of any kind, and there's no chat feature. You also can't send or read messages. On the plus side, it's easy enough to set up. Quick download, and then you just enter in your ID and password once, and it retains it for you so logging in is as easy as selecting the Facebook window. But with such a limited range of features, I don't see myself using it that often. Sure, you can check your friends' updates and post your own, but I feel like I'd only use it if my boyfriend was already on the computer and I had just booted up my 360 or was finishing a game and wanted to check Facebook before shutting it off. The main thing I feel that's missing is some way to link Facebook and your Xbox 360 profile. There are a couple Facebook apps that claim to link your Xbox LIVE ID with your Facebook account, but none of them seem to work terribly well. Hopefully this is a feature they're adding soon, because I would love it if every time I got an Achievement, it posted a status update.
As for Last.fm, I think I love it. I've never tried it or Pandora before, but I love the idea of selecting a musical artist and then after listening to one of their songs, having a series of similar artists cycled through for your enjoyment. And what's terrific is that because Last.fm originated in the UK, they have all my favorite Britpop acts. I mean, I thought it was great to start off with Kylie Minogue and have them offer me Rachel Stevens and Holly Valance, or select Steps and end up listening to Liberty X, but to type in Eurovision and listen to nothing but awesomely cheesy Eurovision winners and contestants? Brilliant. Love.
It retains what you've listened to and creates recommendations for you based on what you enjoy. You can also ban songs that you don't like so they don't pop up again, and choose to like specific songs so that if you feel like subscribing to the premium service, you can listen to playlists of just your favorite tunes. But I'm already discovering new songs that I love, which is a lot of fun. Last.fm on the Xbox also links to the website, so whatever you listen to and enjoy on the computer will be reflected on your 360, which is great. When you're listening to the music, photos of the artist appear and scroll around the screen, which hopefully will help avoid burn-in if you listen for a while, although I fear the logo may be an issue. And the photos look crystal clear on your TV way better than on the website. My only issue with Last.fm is that you can't listen to your playlist while browsing Xbox LIVE. I mean, I can understand not being able to listen to it while playing a game, but why can't I still enjoy the Spice Girls while I go check some Facebook status updates?
All in all, it's not a bad update. I feel like there needs to be more Facebook/Xbox LIVE integration, but I'm kind of in love with Last.fm. Even though there does seem to be some hiccups here and there with buffering the music that makes some songs end almost as soon as they've begun. Now can someone explain to me why Microsoft hasn't plopped Internet Explorer on the 360? Why is the Xbox the only console without a web browser?

I kinda find the facebook update to be pretty lame. I played around on it, trying to find something great...and couldn't find a thing.
Being a long time user of last.fm though, I can gladly say, I too am happy about it. I like the opportunity to have it running, though I wish it was capable of running while I was doing other things on the system.
I too have become a quick addict to last.fm but now the service won't connect on my 360. I get a server error message ect. Not too happy about that and oddly enough it streams much quicker on the 360 (when it's working) than on the pc...
Can't speak for Twitter, but the Zune Marketplace is just a re-branding of the existing video marketplace. As a person who owns a Zune, I find it quite useless because you can't transfer videos or music between the two devices.
Facebook: It's okay. Nothing great. If they are making us download an install file, why not get rid of the the Xbox card interface and make something that makes sense for viewing Facebook on the Xbox?
Last.FM: Don't use it, I have a Zune Pass.
Twitter: It's cute and has a nice layout, but not the most functional.
Zune Marketplace: I was very disappointed with this. I LOVE my Zune player and the Zune desktop software. If you don't use the Zune Software to manage your music shame on you. It's stunning to look at, easy to use and blows WMP and iTunes out of the water. (IMHO) But the update for Xbox is halfhearted. They make Zune look boring and cavelike on Xbox. That being said, I do rent movies on Xbox on occasion so the expanded selection will be nice. The 1080P streaming also intrigues me, but I haven't tried that out yet.
I refuse to get a Facebook, Myspace or Twitter, so like 95% of this update won't affect me in the slightest. But then again my 360 isn't even hooked to the internet right now, and I downgraded to Silver since I never play online games on consoles anyway, so...yeah. I'm not even sure when I'll even have this update installed to be honest.
Twitter is sexy!
But a bit useless as you're sposed to Tweet while you're out buying a new hat or visiting Jacinta at the Beauty Salon.
Tweeting from the Xbox just goes like this
"...i'm playing Batman..."
"...now i'm not..."
"...sigh..."
Not so fun.
Facebook is fun.
Zune doesn't work properly in Aus yet for some reason.
And we don't have Last FM at all.
Aww.
But everything else is peachy keen
Yes it would be nice to be able to continue to enjoy last.fm while on the dashboard, hopefully they will add that addition. As far as a web browser, microsoft explained why they were not interested in adding that. The reason was they are afraid of receiving a virus on the console in wich they would have no control of, which is why they added facebook, twitter and last.fm because they are able to add those as their own apps. I understand that clearly, besides the dreaded RROD, you'd also have to worry about your console catching some sort of virus due to a web browser. Just give me the ability to type searches to where I want to navigate too on my 360 and I'll dance for joy!!!
I use Twitter for news updates. Unfortunately, you can't read more than the standard intro sentence on the 360 because there is no internet. Thumbs down.
Facebook on the 360 vs my iPod Touch version is going to take sometime to adapt. Comment later.
Last.fm is actually better on the 360 than on my PC and iPod Touch.
I love the addition of MSNBC. Again, I like to stay up to date with the news without sitting through half an hour of fluffy. The clips are pretty much a summary of the event, but it's there.
I like listening to Last.Fm through my louder TV speakers, plus the photos look great on the big screen. Win.
Facebook on 360 has LESS features than it does on my iPod Touch. Fail.
I've used Facebook once or twice, but I've used Last.fm a whole bunch. So I guess the update was worth it just for that!
Great Post,
Thanks
