Video: Final Fantasy XIII Japanese Trailer
Clocking in at a little over seven minutes, the Japanese trailer that Square-Enix released today for Final Fantasy XIII is a lot of behold. It's got everything from length cutscenes, to in-game battle sequences, to vehicle fights. It's also got plenty of Japanese dialog, with no subtitles, which may be a good or bad thing, since I'm sure a number of the sequences give away a bit of the plot of the game.
As anyone whose been following this game closely knows, it is set to release on both the PlayStation 3 in Japan this December, with the rest of the world not being able to get their hands on a localized version of the game until Spring 2010 for both the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360, at the earliest. I just have to admit that I'm happy to see that male protagonist for the game does not have his blondish hair spiked up to the sky, like we normally see in a Final Fantasy hero. On the other hand it does seem like there are so many similar-looking female protagonists that it might be hard to keep track of who is whom.
Be sure to check out the HD version of the trailer if you truly want to be blown away.

Pfft, what a lame comment about the similarity of the women!
Of course you can tell them apart, even if three of them have red hair. Lightning's the tough one with the gunblade, her little sister Serah wears a "school girl" uniform, and Vanille has a tribal outfit. I love that there's so many women in this game, because in the past FFs they have been a really small minority.
I'm much more perplexed by games like Suikoden or Breath of Fire where there are dozens of characters all done in the same style.
So...summoned creatures are transformers now?@_@
Beautiful...........
Especially Snow in his bandaged shirtlessness, mmmmmm. Hope its quite a lengthy scene :p
@StFrancisFolly: Welcome to three years ago. XP
Honestly, the first trailer we got in 2006 showed the Shiva Sisters transforming into a motorcycle. I'm just surprised anyone is surprised about this anymore.
They haven't made more than a couple of good female protagonists in the FF series since VI. It's like Japanese women are incapable of standing up for themselves in any situation. Haven't any of them ever burned a bra?
The villains don't look too whiny and depressed though (the Sephiroth formula is shithouse), and Snow looks like he could be a three-dimensional character! Could be a first for Square-Enix.
I'll probably buy it. But if I have to deal with another "failed past, must cry" Final Fantasy, I'll pass and maybe just pirate/rent it.
I'm not 14 anymore, I do not get off on angst-driven plots.
I feel I'm going to love this game.
I'm currently playing Lost Odyssey and I feel like I'm on this emotional ride with the game and I love it (wish there were more games like this, I'm sick of soulless action only games). I hope this FF will provide a similar experience. I'm already loving the music and the new video brings across some new emotions to the game. Even though I don't understand what they are saying, I can still understand the emotion in what they are saying.
Oh dear god... I don't care how fanboyish I sound, this looks like it has the potential to be fucking stellar. Cliched in parts, yes, and perhaps nothing plot or character-wise that hasn't been done before, but this gives me just a glimmer of hope that this game might be what the series has been trying to be on its best days for the past decade.
I hate that the characters are asigned summons.
Mainly because I don't like Snow sitting on his Shiva motorcycle. Too hetero-symbolic for my liking. :P
It being two Shivas makes it even worse. Ugh!
Nop... I still don't like it. Where's Final Fantasy in this one (again)?
i just wish that they would allow you the choice of subbed or dubbed. i seldom like the english voices.
Excited.... but, their clothes still have too many dangling accessories that serve no obvious purpose -_-
Thing is, no matter how cliche SE gets with FF, they really manage to make it a cliche-masterpiece that's enjoyable.
I'm more curious about FFXIV though....
