Singapore 'Slayers' Suicide Pact

Last month, eight teenage gamers in Singapore formed a suicide pact. Six backed out after watching two leap to their deaths from a ninth-floor window. It seems the group were fans of the Slayers series of games, released for Sega Saturn and PlayStation during the late 1990s.
Unfortunately it appears that some themes drawn from the games were involved in the suicide pact, including psychic abilities and a demon-fueled World War III:
According to a police investigation, 16-year-old Ku Witaya, a self-proclaimed Taoist medium, convinced his younger brother and six other boys that they had to die to become `slayers' who would kill demons in a World War III.
Witaya and friend Sia Chan Hong were the two who jumped: Witaya died at the scene and Chan Hong passed away three hours later at hospital.
Witnesses took to the stand yesterday, where former friends of the deceased Witaya say he spoke about joint suicides on several occasions, including a "celebration" of a friend's birthday.
