PSPgo's Bulky Converter Cable Adapter: When Old Accessories (And New Solutions) Fail
![]()
For what it's worth, I can't wait to upgrade to a PSPgo - mostly so I can ditch the scratched, dusty UMDs that bog down the system with truly unacceptable loading times - but also because the prospect of having multiple games available in a self-contained handheld game is a wonderful thing. For me, dealing with capacious memory cards sounds much better than wrangling UMDs, and the added speed boost sweetens the deal greatly. And unlike most uses of memory cartridges like the R4 or M3, which let you run homebrewed and pirated game software on your Nintendo DS, the PSPgo's ultraportable library will be legal.
Being legal, of course, means paying money. Lots of it. And dealing with clumsy solutions like this Converter Cable Adapter: the PSPgo is incompatible with all of the accessories designed for previous PSP models. And the Converter Cable Adapter's disc-like shape seems designed solely to ruin the PSPgo's form factor - or enhance it, if maybe you're a Borg kinda queen.
The adapter drops in Japan on December 24 for 1980 yen or around $21, alongside a $55 Bluetooth headset for the PSPgo. We should see the adapter elsewhere in January of next year.
Meanwhile, if that's not enough money-spendin' for ya, the PSPgo will have the following accessories available for purchase on launch day:
- Cradle $29.99
- AV Cable $19.99
- Component AV Cable $29.99
- USB Cable $14.99
- AC Adaptor $14.99
- Display Protection Film (two pack) $9.99
- Traveler Case (in Lake Blue and Black) $19.99
- Soft Carrying Case $14.99
- In-Ear Headset $19.99
- 2GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor $19.99
- 4GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor $34.99
- 8GB Memory Stick Micro + Duo Adaptor $49.99 (will release shortly after launch)
PSP Go cable converter substitutes form for function [Ars Technica]

I bet Sony is wondering to themselves right now, "are they saying 'Boo' or 'Boo-urns?'"
And again, only one person will have yelled "Boo-urns".
meh, I think I'll be waiting for the 2nd generation of it to come out. It looks like it still has a ways to go.
Hmm.. can't you just put future downloadable PSP games on a memory stick? I'm not seeing the appeal of the Go, even if you want multiple games without switching UMDs..
My problem with the PSPgo is this.
I already have UMD games... what the hell would I do with them? I'm not going to repurchase the digital version just for the PSPgo.
If they offered a trade type approach where I could give them back my UMDs and trade them for the digital versions I might consider it.
... but even then, I'm left with the problem that the memory sticks that the PSP uses are both quite small (capacity wise), and rather expensive.
I have a 4GB one for my PSP3000 at the moment and it is practically full with only a few game saves, one or two demos, and a few music albums.
When you start putting full games on it, which I would hazard a guess at them taking up around 500mb-1gb each, that means if you buy a lot of games... you're gonna be buying a lot of memory sticks to hold them on as well.
Between my music and my games I could easily see myself filling 3 8GB sticks... thats $150 right there....

the psp-go as a 16gigs flash drive and memory cards are for extra space
Yes, that is an important distinction, even if it's not a game changer for some: the PSPgo has 16GB of native flash storage, so if you purchase a memory card (which you'll still have to do if you want to carry around more than 16GB of games, and with FF7 being over 1GB that seems pretty likely) you'll be getting extra storage on top of that.
So if you spend $35 on a 4GB flash card, your PSPgo will now have 20GB - as much as some PS3s.
Get a 8gig sandisk memory stick pro duo for 35-40 bucks if watch the sales at Bestbuy. If you go on amazon it is even cheaper though watch out for the shipping costs. If you go to Walmart you can get it for 31 bucks. I have a bunch of movies, music, and still have Final Fantasy VII, Puzzle Quest, Flow, Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman, Loco Roco 2 demo, Castlevania SON and still have 1332 mb of free space.
I agree with Burr, I am just not seeing the draw of the PSP Go. Maybe in its second version, but not yet.
