Gyromancer Just Got Real
Wow, that was overnight. The collaboration between Pop Cap and Square Enix, Gyromancer, is suddenly the volcanic on Google Trends. The Bejeweled / Final Fantasy hybrid game, which was formally announced less than a week ago, is already picking up some major mainstream attention.
Starting at around 9 PM (PDT) today, the term 'Gyromancer' (and related term 'Gyromancer game') rocketed up to the #2 spot on Google Trends, passing "So You Think You Can Dance flash" (referencing a crotch flash in last night's SYTYCD), "NFL week 4 picks", and even "Tsunami in Samoa 2009". Even though it'll no doubt slow down by the end of the day, it's still amazing to see such a seemingly niche video game beat out such mainstream search terms.
Perhaps seeing the classic Bejeweled game board in screenshots made mild mannered casual gamers regress into their geekier alter egos, causing them to Google the term to find out more. Articles on mainstream-ish sites like MTV and Wired may be to blame. Regardless of what caused this boom in popularity, Gyromancer just got real. The colored gems are aligning, and the casual game apocalypse is neigh. This is going to be huge. Peggle huge.
Update: As commenter Oldtaku pointed out, it may be a result of today's Penny Arcade comic.

And the Penny Arcade comic that just went up probably didn't hurt at all.
After how badly PQ: Galactrix bungled the charm of the first Puzzle Quest (just 'more' is not always better), I'm quite willing to give PopCap + Squeenix a shot at it.
