Ron Gilbert To Deliever PAX09 Keynote

monkey_island2.jpg

I am not envious of the Penny Arcade guys when it comes to making some of the larger choices for PAX, their incredible annual gamer festival. For example, picking just one city for their east coast expansion must have been a nightmare. There's no way to please everyone, but a choice had to be made. The latest difficult choice that they made was selecting a keynote speaker for this year's "PAX Prime" (that's the one that takes place in Seattle). But if you ask me, this year's selection of Ron Gilbert, founder of Humongous Entertainment and the writer/director behind The Secret of Monkey Island, is one that is sure to please fans. From the sounds of it, the process of selecting this year's speaker was especially difficult...

Because PAX is about culture, our keynote speakers are always tough to pick. We don't have that laser-like focus for the show, so it's not like some guy with a powerpoint deck that rattles off charts and numbers for an hour is going to cut it. We've wanted to get Ron to do our keynote for a while, and even though his resume alone qualifies him in regard to how he has shaped our pastime, it's who he is today that tells us this keynote will be one to remember.

As a Loom superfan, I couldn't be more excited! Gilbert joins a short, but extremely impressive list of PAX keynote speakers that includes Bioshock visionary Ken Levine, everybody's favorite nerd Wil Wheaton, and DirectX co-creator Alex St. John. The Penny Arcade Expo takes place in downtown Seattle, September 4th-6th. Between this, the six bands signed up for concerts, and promises of some big "wow factor"-rich tournaments I wonder what other surprises PAX has in store this year.
