Cheap Date: 101 Free Games 2009 Is Here!

Strapped for cash? I love my Cheap Dates and all, but none get cheater (or longer) than 1up.com's latest installment to their annual 101 Free Games list. The list covers it all: Adventure, FPS, Strategy and my personal favorite "WTF." While the list reminded me of some great games that I've already run into before (such as Shift 3 and the fiendishly addictive Spelunky), the list includes some lesser known titles that shouldn't be missed either. Eversion's transformation from saccharine sweet platformer to twisted acid trip is something that has to be seen to be believed. Gang Garrison 2 adapts Team Fortress 2 into 2D space a little too well. Meowcenaries should amuse anyone that gets a giggle out of LOLcat pictures. The arty Coil takes players on an abstract journey with an awesome musical score. Taking the notion of an interactive mashup to the highest heights possible, Rom Check Fail should offer a real challenge to retrogamers with some witty and engaging design.
There's so much content here, I feel like my list of highlights barely scratches the surface of the plethora of free gaming to be had reviewing this list. Go check it out for yourself and save a few bucks for something important... like more games.
Just one word of warning for our Apple loving friends: while there is a good portion of the games that can be played through flash enabled browsers, there's also another good portion of them that can only be played on a Windows machine.

Gang Garrison 2 is coming along really nicely - when I first ran into it as a participant in the TIGsource Demake compo last year, it was fun albeit unfinished (the constructor couldnt build guns, the models were less refined). Now, in v 2.1, everything seems to be working smoothly, it's just very unfortunate that I have abysmal lag to all servers - presumably bc they are across the pond.
Another game from that compo that got me hooked was House Globe, a demake of Home World. Very well done graphically as well as in the sound department, really *really* polished, and I'm still hoping they flesh it out into a full-blown game, I'd pay money for it.
