Xbox Live Community Watch - 6/12/09

Whew, what a week. Sorry this is getting posted a bit later than usual, but with 21 games released I had my hands full more than usual. 21 is a lot of games, and what's even better is that most of them are really, really good. One of them I even declare as one of my favorite games of all time. Really? Read on for the top games of the week, and don't forget to hit the jump for the full rundown of this week's community game releases.

Yay

  • Puzzwords - 200 MS points. Puzzwords has instantly become one of my favorite games ever. Not just for community games, not just on the 360. Ever. It's like Tetris, but instead of clearing lines you are clearing words of 3 letters or more. You can clear words horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Each letter has a point value, similar to the scoring system for Scrabble. There's even a window on the side of the screen to show the definition of any word you clear. Puzzle and word game fans absolutely must play this game, and I highly recommend it for anyone else as well.
  • unRevolutionary - 400 MS points. UnRevolutionary may not be a revolution for twin-stick shooters, but it is loaded with well implemented ideas that make it the best twin-stick shooter on the 360. First, you've got 4 special weapons mapped to the triggers and bumpers on the controller, which give you abilities like a turret or a fire trail to defeat enemies. Then there's the upgrade system, which allows you to improve several attributes of your ship as well as the 4 special weapons.
  • Revenge of the Evil Aliens - 200 MS points. Gameplay variety makes this twin-stick shooter stand out among the others available for download. One minute you'll be blasting alien UFOs, then the next you'll be dodging asteroids, then later a combination of the two. And constantly you'll be confronted by new enemies with new attack behaviors to ensure that the game feels fresh throughout the entire playthrough. You can even share the experience with 3 friends through multiplayer.
  • Constructor 360 - 200 MS points. This is simply brilliant. It's essentially a virtual lego set, with an assortment of block shapes and colors allowing you to build pretty much whatever you want. I can't believe a game like this hasn't been made before. Sure, it's not quite as satisfying as the real thing, but it's still amazingly fun. If you were a Lego kid growing up, then this is a must-buy.
  • Hangman's Revenge! - 200 MS points. I love the quirky concept of this game, where stickfigures are revolting due to the genocide caused by the game Hangman. You control a tank, helicopter, hovercraft, and submarine as you fight your way through hordes of deadly, and poorly drawn, stick figures. At any time you can switch between the vehicles, which is very satisfying to blast enemies with your tank then switch to the helicopter to dodge incoming bullets. There's also an upgrade system where you can spend your score earned in the levels to improve the health and weapons of your vehicles. Oh, and one of the bosses is a stick figure riding a crocodile that shoots missles. Simply epic.
  • Project Alpha - 200 MS points. A space shooter with a heavy economy/trading system in place. Buy low from on planet, then fly to another one to sell high. Upgrade your ship with a variety of weapons, or buy a new ship and upgrade that. The number of planets you can visit and the customization options are huge, so space exploration and economy sim fans will find a lot to love here.
  • Spy Chameleon - 200 MS points. As the game's title implies, you play as a secret agent chameleon, and need to avoid detection by enemy agents. Change color with the face buttons to blend in with different colored floors to hide from their cone of vision. Later on you get items like smoke bombs to help you even more. Spy Chameleon kicks off a new "stealth puzzle" genre in style.

Ay?

  • Fittest - 400 MS points. Yet another twin-stick shooter for the Xbox 360. This one puts an emphasis on multiplayer, with enemies and bosses changing depending on the number of people playing. It's got some great ideas, like multiple weapons, and on-the-fly objectives that give you power ups. Unfortunately you need to use the face buttons to toggle between weapons, which feels pretty clunky. The soundtrack does deserves special mention though, for just being awesome.
  • Cube Stacker - 200 MS points. It's Tetris. There are no bells or whistles or gameplay twists. Just Tetris. It has a very clean look to it and the music is absolutely hypnotic, so if you're looking for an unofficial game of Tetris this is one of the best you'll find. But chances are if you want to play Tetris you already own it in some form by now.
  • Golden Royal Hold 'em - 400 MS points. A fairly standard game of Texas (or Omaha) Hold 'em. There are awards to unlock that also unlock new furniture to customize your poker room with, which is a nice touch that more community games should learn from. If you have other people to play it with online, it would be great, but good luck finding someone.
  • Mind's Eye of Jupiter 01 - 200 MS points. An ambitious episodic adventure game from a first-person perspective. The pacing isn't that great, since you're thrown into the game with no idea of what you are supposed to be doing, and by the time you figure it out and things get interesting the episode ends. Hopefully there will be more episodes coming, because now I am intrigued by it, but know that if you're buying this game that it isn't the complete experience.
  • Battle Ball - 200 MS points. This is actually one of the best Pong clones I've seen in a long time. Sure, it's not much of a looker, but it lets you fire lasers at your opponent's paddle to slow their movement for a short time, which adds quite a bit of strategy. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to how the ball bounces off your paddle, regardless of how you try angle the shot, which is a pretty big detriment to the game.

Nay

  • Heli Good Spelunker - 200 MS points. You control a helicopter going through a tunnel. Hold A to fly up, let go to fly down. It's a pretty simple game, and can be fun for a while, at least until the sound effects burn into your skull. There are enough free versions of this on the web that I can't really recommend buying it for your 360.
  • Jigsaw World - 400 MS points. A jigsaw puzzle game. Normally the fun of a jigsaw puzzle is to match pieces together to build a picture. This game takes a different approach by giving you a black and white picture, and you lay pieces down on top of that picture. It would be good for children though, so there's that to consider.
  • Whack Em In A Hole - 200 MS points. A basic game of whack-a-mole that lets you use a Rock Band drum kit to hit the gophers. Unfortunately, even the tactile feeling of hitting the drum kit doesn't feel completely satisfying because of some sloppy presentation issues, like using low-res blurry pictures of gophers with no animation.
  • The Galactic Aquarium - 200 MS points. A game about breeding fish. You buy fish, click on the next day, and read a text box telling you how many fish died and how many were born. Rinse and repeat. The minimal amount of interaction involved in the game really takes away from the experience.
  • Tic Tac Toe - 200 MS points. A very basic game of tic tac toe. Tic tac toe is one of the most boring games to play against a computer because if it's programmed well then every game will be a stalemate. This game of Tic Tac Toe also includes a version of "Rock, Paper, Scissors," but that's hardly a selling point.
  • Starfighter - 200 MS points. Where other shooters released this week stood out because of their variety, Starfighter is lost in the crowd for not taking any new risks. It's a decent space shooter, but it doesn't do anything that hasn't been done, and often done better, in dozens of other games.
  • A Moron's Challenge - 200 MS points. I can only assume that this is a joke game that could be good for a laugh challenging your friends to. But really, if you pay for this you've already lost the moron's challenge.
  • Plasma TV Break In - 200 MS points. This is a program to "break in" a new plasma TV. This is only useful on a new plasma TV to help avoid a burnt in image. If you don't have a plasma TV or if you've had a plasma TV for a while then just pass right by this one.
  • EyeCandy: Chromadose - 200 MS points. It's a music visualizer, except that the visuals don't actually seem to have any connection to the rhythm or beat of whatever music is being played. Add in the fact that there are no music controls in the program itself, and you have a pretty uninspiring community game offering.
