Video: ARhrrrr Using NVidia Tegra To Make AR Table Top Gaming
I like AR. It's rarely practical, almost always clunky, but I like the idea of integrating reality and video gaming into one seamless environment. Microsoft is making huge strides in this field with their Natal platform. But what about mobile gaming. With devices like the DSi and iPhone offering realtime 3d and cameras, it's really only a matter of time before this technology becomes more polished and universal. This is where NVidia's Tegra platform enters the picture.
The chipset is awesome, even if it's not available to the public. Frankly, looking at this tech demo I'm ready to have it now. Using realtime pattern recognition, developers have effectively created a "magic window" shooter that utilizes not only real-world motion for aim and interaction, but abstract, real-world objects (skittles in this case) to take the place of in-game items that would normally require gestures or special input devices to place.
The game is obviously not ready for primetime, and the likelihood of seeing this software in the near future is unlikely, as the Tegra does has not, and will not launch for awhile. This is, however, a very good concept that you know some commerical dev house is going to latch on to.
