Video: PSP Badman Goes DLC Only
You know that game Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman: What Did I Do to Deserve This? No? Don't feel bad, it's a somewhat silly, and elusive title coming out from NIS America July 16. It's a crazy little pixel art dungeon management game that pits players against menacing do gooders in an attempt to save their lair. Sounds awesome right? I thought so too.
Now, there is some "bad" news. Why did I put that in quotes? Well, I don't think it's a bad at all, but I know not everyone will agree with me. Holy Invasion of Privacy Badman: What Did I Do to Deserve This will now be a download only title. Yep, you heard me, NIS decided to drop the retail market altogether and is shooting for straight to PSN.
Why don't I think this is the worse thing ever? Well, the game is about as niche as it gets. Cultural references, internet jokes and just generally weird style pretty much puts this in a category that dooms it from being a huge success. Why risk it when you can just slap the puppy in an online store, cut the overhead and increase your profits! I'm also happy that this means that I won't have to run to Gamestop, and I can just snag it in the office at lunch.
Holy PlayStation Network, Badman goes Downloadable Only [Siliconera]

You want to know why this is bad?
I can import a US PSP game and just play it on my European PSP. I can not however, download games from the US online store. Not to my knowledge anyway.
@Nexus:
The PSP doesn't really region lock downloads, you just have to purchase a PSN points card online for that region and then create a PSN account for a different locale. At least, that's how it works for Japan releases in the US.
Also, the game was released on disk for Japan, and the game is not particularly text heavy, so if you still require a physical copy that is one way to go.
Does Sony and NIS America think we're made of MEMORY CARDS?
Seriously! It's a wonderful scam, to where we have to pay for the game itself and then spend more money for a memory card to hold said game.
While some people might write this off as a paranoid rant, think of it this way, if Sony goes completely download only with the PSP, those games will need cards to hold them. And if the game is over 1 gig, enjoy buying a 2 Gig memory card at retail for 25 bucks.
I enjoyed the demo a lot, so I'll probably be downloading this when it becomes available.
I love companies like NIS and Atlas, and want them to keep doing what they do, but the price of game production has gone way up since the PS2 days. If making downloadible titles helps them stay in business, and makes them keep bringing games to the US, then it sounds like a solid plan to me.
