Fantastic Flash Friday: RetroShoot
This week's Fantastic Flash Friday is brought to you by reader Bloodie Strawberries who sent in an email pointing me towards the side-scrolling shooter aptly named RetroShoot. Funny enough I actually stumbled across the same game many moons ago, but at the time was up to my neck playing many different flash games, many of which I featured already on the site. RetroShoot almost slipped through the cracks, but luckily Bloodie brought it back to my attention, just shows what a big help our readers can be (and that's a subtle hint that your suggestions and emails are always welcome in my Inbox).
As for the game itself, RetroShoot is exactly what the name would lead you to believe, a retro shooter. It does this by taking graphical elements from many old school arcade games such as Asteroids and Space Invaders, and then puts in all the elements that make for a great side-scrolling shooter. As a nod back to the classic arcade games, you only get three lives to play the game, but can continue up to three times. It's also great to see all those old enemies playing together from those games that made your thumbs ache back in the day.
The game isn't just all old school, the creators have added in some modern twists to keep the game rocking. The most notable is the pulsing techno/dance background music that beats through your speakers as you are playing. The old school sound effects from the game compliment the music's rhythm well and breaks up the soundtrack a little bit giving you a funky track to listen to as you blast through each level. Along with the music, they've added in some new and interesting weapon upgrades that also have some pretty sweet visuals to go with them.
What great flash game is there without the classic achievement hook to keep gamers coming back for more? Well RetroShoot has achievements built into the game and ups the difficulty on accomplishing them by only allowing you to qualify for an achievement if you do it without having to use any of your continues. With over 40 levels of play, this little shooter that could will keep you playing for hours on end. Just make sure it doesn't suck you into its retro greatness too much, some items from the past should stay in the closet, even if you haven't.
