E3 09: Hands On With Super Mario Bros. Wii

Mario fans were thrilled by the announcement of four new Mario games at Nintendo's E3 press conference this year. Building on the nostalgia and popularity of the original Super Mario Bros. on the NES, Nintendo plans to bring the Mario platforming goodness to the Wii.

Based on the 3D character/2D platforming style of New Super Mario Bros. on the DS, this new Wii Mario Bros will have a new feature never before seen in a SMB game, four player multiplayer. While playing in the multi-player mode you can choose to help out your friends or send them flying with a turtle shell to the ankles. Each character comes equipped with five lives and once they are gone, so is the player for the remainder of the level. The game seems fairly balanced however with power up blocks spewing forth multiple mushrooms, stars and fire flowers.

Players can choose from Mario, Luigi and Toad who comes in two flavors, yellow and blue. Nintendo wouldn't say if other characters would be available, but I suspect we'll see some other members of the Mario family popping up. Princess Peach and Daisy perhaps? Maybe even a little Donkey Kong action? Only time will tell!

My time with Super Mario Bros. Wii was sadly short, but I thoroughly enjoyed the multi-player aspect and look forward to delving deeper into it when it releases this holiday season.

I'm a bit worried about this one. It's not that I don't have friends, but to have enough around at any one time and often enough does that warrant buying a game for us to play on those occasions. Unless they launch it as a wi-fi game and can compete against online friends and randoms too.

It just sounds like Four Swords all over again (GC/GBA). Excellent game but so reliant on having gaming friends around.

Unless the single player experience is fully fleshed out as well then maybe I wont feel like Im playing just a portion of the game.

So, theyre really keeping the blue and yellow toads..? I figured they were just placeholders and actual characters would be added.. How boring. Why cant peach be playable or at least only have one toad..

@Lexy

Something like SMB2? With Peach and Toad being playable as well. Though this seems like a good way to also pop in with Daisy to help the plumbers out or be someone they need to save.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
