E3 09: Dragon Age: Origins
The new non-elite E3 had some definite downsides, and nowhere was the disappointment greater than in EA's closed door meetings. Disappointing because the meetings were only technically behind closed doors - public and press alike had to stand in line for over 30 minutes to enter each demo, and when we got there we weren't shown anything that isn't already on the internet - and since the public was there, there was no Q&A, arguably the heart of the closed-door concept.
So it's with a bit of a heavy heart that I show you the trailer I saw for Dragon Age: Origins. I wish I had something fabulous to share with you, but after the trailer the developers showed some brief gameplay...expounding on the nature of romance within the world of Dragon Age, which launches on October 20.
Unfortunately, there was nothing new there: the devs went on a rather lengthy ramble about how your character can flirt with one pretty lady party member and enter into a romantic dialog. But if your character flirts with another lady party member, the devious Morrigan (whose voice was, I believe, that of scifi queen Claudia Black), the first pretty lady will get angry and force you to choose between the two pretty ladies.
That wasn't a new concept back in the Baldur's Gate days, so I was utterly baffled as to why they'd show us some rehashed, par-for-the-RPG-course romance mechanic when Dragon Age is a blast to play and has lots more to offer.
I know this because I played the game when EA came to NYC - it was playable at E3, at three stations in the back of the closed door meeting room. Which was great for the public with the time to wait in line (again) to play, and rather less great for anyone with another appointment to get to. Sorry, EA, but taking up two hours to show off the least interesting aspects of what I'm sure will be a very fine game is not the way to get coverage with any substance.

Give me a man-on-man romance and I'll just overlook any other rehashes and cliches.
Ideally I would want the option of a same sex pairing.
But as long as they don't force you into a man-woman relationship I'll be happy.
face tattoos, yall.
