Review: Klonoa

Klonoa Wii.jpg

What do you get when you take a game created on the PlayStation over ten years ago and redress it for the Wii? Well if the remake of Klonoa: Door to Phantomile is any indication, you get pretty graphics, great gameplay, and interesting characters along with newly added cutscenes with full voice work. While some of these aspects deliver in full force, others of them are nightmares that people of Phantomile shouldn't have to endure.

A month ago I got to see a preview of Klonoa at the Namco-Bandai Editors Day and was very happy with what was presented. The graphics wowed me and the gameplay seemed refreshing and fun. The game was released a few weeks ago at the $29.99 price point for the Wii and so I got a copy; however, would the game live up to my dreams, or would I find that Ghadius had changed even my dreams into a nightmare? Find out after the jump.

Having played the game in its entirety, I have to say that my initial love of the 2.5D graphics and gameplay has only increased leaps and bounds, while the game's script and voice acting almost encouraged me to skip past the fabulous cutscenes added to the game. Overall, however, I feel that what the game does have to offer far outdoes the flaws.

Let's start with the graphics. Yes, this is on the Wii, but I'll be damned if people are going to put down what the system can do. The varied environments of the Phatomile world are fantastic, and the 2D platforming is wonderfully enhanced by the 3D world which spins and turns around you as you curve around towers, tress and water slides. They've also employed a vibrany color palette in the game that really helps with the cartoonish art style of the characters. The game really shows just what kind of graphics you can get out of the Wii if you put a little time and effort behind the game.

As for the gameplay, this remake of Klonoa stays true to its roots by using the same mechanics as the original, yet makes the levels seem fresh and exciting. Grabbing enemies with your wind bullets is easy and fun, and then using them to both interact with the foreground and background, as well as double jump, gives the game plenty of platforming puzzles. While the first few levels are quite simplistic, about halfway through the story, the difficulty picks up a bit. I will admit that there were certain sections where the game has you making unforgiving platform jumps over bottomless pits, and erring starts you all over again, which always annoys me; however, these sections are very few and far between (except for on the very last level) and there are plenty of checkpoints to save your progress soon after these hard sections. At the same time, it's quite easy to get extra lives in the game, which I never ran out of.

The story for the game was where I felt the game kind of fell flat. Don't get me wrong, the characters in the story are fantastic. The art design of all the characters seems flawless, and a few are even a bit quirky; nevertheless, the script for the game is rather cheesy, even by kid's standards, and the voice work is paltry. I know that most platformers don't have the best stories, mainly save this girl from this baddie, and original Klonoa fits that mold; however, by trying to add more to the script, the extra voice work and cutscenes almost seem to lessen that story. All negativity aside, the script does at least have a few twists in plot (most of them obvious) and even one existential moment at the very end of the game in which you find out the true relationship between Klonoa and Hewpoe, the main characters in the game. The voice acting also only highlights just how poor the script can be at times, with Klonoa exclaiming "Right!" no less than 10 times during the course of the game right after someone has given a lengthy exposition of the current plot.

As for replay, this game has quite a bit of replay value after you beat the initial story mode. Not only can you gain access to changing Klonoa's costume after you beat the game, you can also go back and replay levels to try and obtain all the hidden pieces of the kingdom signets in each level. On top of that, you can also put the game into "reverse" mode which mirrors each level and then hides a bonus room somewhere within the reversed level. These bonus rooms are filled with super hard challenges that had my fingers aching after trying to complete a few. While the game itself only takes 5+ hours to beat the first time, they've definitely added some goodies in the game to keep you playing well after the story is finished.

Overall, I enjoyed Klonoa despite the flaws that it has and was statisfied with myself once the game ended. With how much you get at the $29.99 price tag, I think the enjoyment you'll get through the graphics and gameplay are well worth the price of admission. Just don't expect that voice work to wow you over and remember that hitting the minus button can skip the cutscenes if they become too much for you to handle.

thanks for the review, picked the game up and didn't regret it.
it's worth noting that you can switch the voices to the original gibberish language which might possibly reduce wincing during spoken bits.
classic tight level design and the glossy fantasy visuals really make this one!

I got it launch day & am half way through it. I took time off from it so as not to rush it. I never found the original, but played the demo to death. Though I would have liked to have gotten the original, it was worth the wait. I love it, classic platforming done a little unconventionally.

I set the voices to Phantomile first thing as the English voices are atrocious beyond all rational comprehension. Other than the crappy English on the title screen I thought it was pretty much perfect. I loved the original, I loved Klonoa 2, and this Wii remake is nigh perfect.
Now all they need to do is give us Klonoa 3.

I agree, this remake is great. I also turned off the English voices, and the Phantomile is so much better! The graphics are very pretty, and I actually spent a while just staring at some of the pretty water effects. The bonus levels are super hard too, and I'm having trouble grabbing multiple enemies in the air...very demanding!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
