Resident Evil 5 Sells 4.4 Million

At the Reuters Global Technology Summit in Tokyo, Capcom CFO Kazuhiko Abe released an impressive number: across the globe, Capcom sold 4.4 million copies of Resident Evil 5 between the game's March 13 launch and the end of the month.
That's the same month that saw US game industry sales sink by 17% year-over-year - while US sales of RE5 totaled 1.52 million units.
By the end of April, RE5 moved another 570,000 copies, almost insuring that Capcom's survival horror flagship will have hit the 5 million mark sometime this month.
Like other Japanese software publishers facing a shrinking domestic game market, including Square Enix, Capcom is doggedly pursuing the US and European markets, although unlike Square Enix, Capcom isn't pursuing acquisitions at the moment:
"We aim to achieve 10 percent growth in sales and hit an operating margin of 15 percent each year. But acquisitions are not how we are going to do that, at least for now," Abe said."We plan to strengthen our own business first, and only after completing that process, we will think about things like acquisitions."
So far, so good - thanks to RE5 and Street Fighter IV, Capcom ended its March 2009 fiscal year up 11%.
