PS3 To Become Industry Leader... In 3+ Years

It's pretty much been universally accepted that the Playstation 3 has been taking a backseat to the Xbox 360 for hardcore sales, and the Wii for casual. It's a mix of being slow to market, not knowing their audience and having some of the most bizzare marketing choices I've ever seen for a platform since the Sega Saturn. We all remember bald halo'd chick right? 'Nuff said.
Sony has been fighting tooth and nail to kick the 3rd console curse. Nintendo had the N64, Sega had the Saturn, and now the PS3. They simply refuse to accept that it's not going to be top dog and no level of spin is going to save it. Finally soon retiring Sony Europe president David Reeves has made the single most irrational projection for the PS3 yet. It will overtake the market in 3 ~ 5 years:
"I don't think it will be next year, but in three to five years it will become dominant on the market," said Reeves, talking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz."The legacy will be that people will see a tortoise and hare situation. In a way, in the end it will be a dead heat. People will say PS3 took a while to get going but it really caught up very quickly and confounded many of the critics from the first year"
In 3 years, the PS3 will be almost five and a half years old. That's a year longer than the average lifespan of a console. That also means that the Xbox 360 will be more than six, and will already have a successor on the market. This is all assuming that the market continues the way it has for the last few decades. It is pretty safe to say that by then the PS3 will be yesterday's news, cell processor and blu-ray or not.

So it will be the leader when the next round of consoles are being talked about?
That's a really good strategy......
I think they're going to try and do this by stating the PS4 isn't going to be backwards compatible with the PS3.
It's not necessarily a baseless statement. A year or two ago you could have said the PS2 was the industry leader by number of consoles and games sold.
Of course by that time, it was about 8 years old and on it's way out. Basically Sony's statement just says they intend the PS3 to hang around like the PS2 did -- which is much longer than the typical console lifespan.
