Capcom's Pinky Swear: RE5 DLC Is Not On The Disc

re5multiplay.jpg

When the Resident Evil 5 Multiplayer DLC came out for Xbox Live this week at a seemingly paltry 1.8 MB on Xbox Live (and even less on PSN), some fans cried foul. After all, in this day and age, how much substantial data can be in 1.8 MB? Despite what Capcom claimed when the DLC was announced, gamers assumed this was another case of a company making people pay to just unlock content already on the disc. In a now locked post on the Capcom Unity message boards, fans called out Christian 'Sven' Svensson, vice president of corporate development and strategic planning and asked for answers. He responded:

Keys are 100K or less. It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc.

So it's just a case of efficient coding, not tricky developers. I wonder if that answer really placated the folks who were truly offended, or if it's more the fact that they're not giving it away in the first place. I'll be curious to see the sales figures on this DLC, if we ever get them. After all, the series doesn't really have a competitive multiplayer history, add in the controversy and I wonder if Capcom wishes they had handled things a little differently.

even if it is just efficient coding... the fact that its such a small file, means its very little coding, which means it probably didn't take long to develop... which begs the question, why was it not included in the first place?

Look what they did with Street Fighter 4 costumes... Capcom makes some good games, but apparently they're not above gouging their customers.

My 2 cents?I won´t give any 2 cents to a content that was supposed to be on the disc... RE5 wasn´t a good game (RE4 is much, much better) and it doesn´t deserve more money: It was not a survival horror game and it was a bad action game.

I liked RE5, but it wasn't survival horror. If you want real survival horror, get Dead Space.

Will someone please explain to me how RE4 is any more survival horror than RE5 is?

I love resident evil 5, its a great action game me and my boyfriend can play together, and encourages team playing, instead of the usual shoot everything until it dies halo, killzone, resistance whatever. Looking forward to Lost planet 2 next for some good co-op ^_^

The problem with RE is that it looked like a collection of demos and worse, RE4 recycled. I´m a huge fan of the series( I own all the games and even the game boy one)and I have RE5 but after I finished it, I didn´t have the wish to play it again. With RE4 you´re in a village and then in castle and then in a mine (racing a in a mine cart!) and the game changes and it´s more fun than annoying...RE5 repeats itself over and over (how many times we have to fight Uroboros? And why we have big guys with Gatling guns again?)... RE4 is pure action but you have some good moments of suspense: the village at night, with the fog and the storm. The underground when you have to fight against the semi-invisible bugs...you actually can see Leon losing his head in a blood bath... RE5 for example, failed with the new inventory system, the act of finding treasures is not so compelling (everybody misses the Merchant) and even the weapon upgrades seemed useless... the guy at Zero Punctuation explained better than me why RE5 is a bad game.
And by the way, despite the fact that Dead Space is a good and atmospheric game, it´s a huge RE4 rip off (c´mon! We even have a shooting gallery!)... A real survival horror? I can give you more than one: Fatal Frame(1,2), Siren(1,2 and Blood Curse),Silent Hill (1,2,3)...
After RE5, suddenly, Silent Hill Homecoming doesn´t look that bad (the meele combat is tense and it got some good horror moments)...
but hey, it´s just my opinion! :D

RE5 was okay, but not nearly as good or revolutionary as RE4 was. I'm not interested in the Vs. mode in the slightest, I much prefer co-op play to vs play and it already has that. So even if it were on the disc I'd probably not play it much if at all. Co-op Mercenaries is a lot of fun and more than enough to keep my interest.

I said from the beginning that Resi 5 was looking a bit poo and I got shot down, yet am feeling a little smug now:P

I still enjoyed the game but Resi 4 was 10x better. 4 was survival horror bordering on action whereas 5 is just action. And SilentSpartan is right, it just doesnt have the variety and def no scares.

This isn't as bad as the Skate 2 crap that EA pulled. They wanted people to pay for a camera filter feature that was already included in the first game. Or the ridiculous amount of Beautiful Katamari downloads for outrageous prices.

If I don't feel it's an "expansion", then I don't purchase it. This RE5 stuff at least feels like something new for my 5 bucks.

i haven't read up too much on the VS. mode...but how can you have VS. mode, when you cant run and shoot in the normal game...? so is it just a bunch of people standing around shooting at each other?

@SilentSpartan

i hear you, and i understand, but you didn't so much explain how RE4 is more survival horror than RE5, but rather why you prefer it in general. sure, in RE4, you're in a village, then a castle, then underground....and in RE5 you're in a shanty town, then you're underground, then you're on a boat, then you're on a bus being chased by motorcycle zombies, then you're in ancient temples...etc. etc. i know RE4 was hugely original, but i don't expect that from every game in a franchise. let's be honest, the main difference between these two games is the co-op. i for one had a blast playing through RE5 with a pal, which inevitably changes things. it's not nearly as scary shooting things up with a pal, as it is wandering around alone, but i think RE5 is meant to be like playing your favorite action/horror movie. it, much like MGS4, felt like an epic cinematic experience with my favorite characters...and when it's over, there is a sense of finality which I kind of enjoyed. so while RE4 may feel "scarier" than RE5, i think the only moment of true survival horror it has to its credit is a certain burning corpse bursting from an oven (wee!)

SilentSpartan said:

David, you´re right!It´s just my opinion :P

But listen, with RE4 you actually, even with all the weapons, felt vulnerable once in a while. I played RE5 story mode with a friend and it was very funny but while we were blasting infectees, we talked about how was our day and about the hot guys we met the last weekend... there was no tense moment, no "shhesh... what was that?Did you hear that noise?" we just went through killing living things (thanks Barry, for the quote :) )
My point is that RE5 failed as a survival horror and as the action game it intended to be.

meh, i feel you to some degree, but i still had fun with it...
