The Secret's Out: PlayStation 2 Drops to $99

As we all know, last week Sony let it be known that they would be making a huge global announcement today. Everyone was hoping for a PS3 price drop, but rumors were strong that it would actually be a PS2 price drop and it looks like the rumors were true. A press release went out in the wee hours of the morning that the PS2 will recieve a price reduction to $99. By year's end, the nine year old system will have a whopping 1,900 titles under it's belt with more to come. Talk about staying power! The PS2 has outlasted the other consoles of its generation by a long shot and still continues to be one of the most played systems on the market.
So those of you hoping for a PS3 price reduction are out of luck for the moment, but time and economy would dictate than one should be coming soon. At least we can hope.

Well, staying power for me means more than the system still being on sale somewhere. Like, there being any actual games coming out for it. For the PS2, there's roughly 2 new releases a month, most of which are either movie tie-ins (ugh), other secondary licensed games (meh), sports series (yawn) or mediocre PSP-Ports (yuck). Granted, if you haven't played DMC, God of War or some other blockbusters, now would be a good time to check them out on the cheap. The PS2 is a good budget option, but no serious competition for the current gen systems.
