GDC 09: Nintendo Announces LoZ: Spirit Tracks for DS

Between strange telling stories involving Miyamoto kidnapping Nintendo employees and approving budgets for dance training Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata used his keynote speech to announce the latest installment of the Legend of Zelda series, tentatively titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Using the same art style featured in Wind Waker and The Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks leaves behind talking boats for a cannon-armed locomotive. The quick announcement trailer also shows off a new wind/push powers and an ability that allows Link to get powerful statues to do his dirty work for puzzles and combat. At the conclusion of the teaser, Iwata announced that the title would be available "later this year." For the first time in a long while, I'm tempted to believe this release date because the title looks as polished as Phantom Hourglass. While Wind Waker may not have introduced sailing to players in the best way possible, I quite enjoyed its presence in Phantom Hourglass. Anyone else going to miss the King of Red Lions?

Whilst I think this is a missed opportunity for a first proper DSi title [and system seller], I've been wanting more from the WW portion of the Zelda universe for ages!
And it's good to see that steam trains exist in the series' reality now, and not just in the dream world that Project Deluge was. *sighs*

I'm glad to see more Celda too, though for some reason the first thing that came to mind was "Zelda Crossing".
As long as they offer a control scheme other than "touch screen only" this time. I couldn't stand Phantom Hourglass because of the controls.
