iPhone OS 3.0: DLC And Multiplayer Improved!
I was not expecting to see a lot in the way of gaming related updates for the iPhone. Today, Apple began a keynote on the future OS for the iPhone, namely the iPhone OS 3.0 update. Not only will a great number of user interface changes be made, there will be some serious improvements to the way games are distributed and devices connect to one another.
Here is a brief list of features coming in the next update:
- Search your iPhone
- Cut, copy, and paste
- Send photos, contacts, audio files, and location via MMS*
- Read and compose email and text messages in landscape
- Application Push
- Peer-to-Peer local connectivity (over bluetooth)
- Downloadable content from inside applications using Apple Store Login
There is a mighty crap ton more that is still be announced. Be sure to check our sister site Homotron for more details once the keynote is finished.
What does this mean for gamers? Well, if you live some where with a large density of iPhones (San Francisco, for example) then peer-to-peer gaming is likely to be a big deal for you. Otherwise, shareware titles are libel to start dropping like mad crazy. I'm sure games like Tap Tap REvenge will start selling songs in game through the new interface, as well as games like Rolando will likely release level packs. This is likely to sound more exciting for developers than the end user, but believe me, it is a good thing.

The game is Tap Tap Revenge, and they've already been allowing for new song downloads in-game. Which makes me wonder how they've been doing it, if not through Apple-developed APIs...
