Hands On With The Nintendo DSi

fbmariodsi.jpg

Last Friday I headed downtown to check out Nintendo's newest handheld, the DSi. It's slimmer, brighter and has a very slick Wii-like interface. Now before you get worried about the demise of your precious DS Lite, never fear! Nintendo does not intend to stop making or supporting the Lite. You can think of the DSi as a sort of DS Lite Pro. A more advanced version of the DS for those of you that want a camera, DSi Ware and don't mind losing the GBA slot.

The DSi will initially come in two flavors, black and an aqua blue that will only be available in North America. Now I say initially however future colors were not stated by Nintendo, but knowing them the other colors will start flowing before too long. With the demise of the GBA slot, the DSi is slimmer and lighter than the Lite and it's screens are a bit larger as well. It has smaller, more powerful speakers and there are two cameras built in, one on the front and one on the inside allowing you to take self photos much easier. The volume and power sliders have been replaced with buttons allowing for an easier soft reboot of the system. A new slot has also been added to house an SD card providing loads more room for photos, music and DSi Ware.

Aside from the cosmetic changes, the interface has gotten a major overhaul as well. As I mentioned before, it's much more in line with the Wii's interface. The setting menus in particular are nearly identical. The main screen provides you with a horizontal scrolling menu where you can access the many new features including the camera, music player and the DSi Shop. The menu can be scrolled through using the stylus and has forty additional blank slots for your DSi Ware, much like the channels on the Wii. You can of course hold more than forty DSi Ware games, but you'll need an SD card to store them on. It should be noted that these games will only be able to be played on your DSi and no one else's. The DSi ware games are not currently announced, but we did check out a Wario Ware game that made use of the internal camera.

Speaking of the camera, let's talk a bit about the photo functions of the DSi. The camera comes with ten virtual "lenses" that can be used on your photos before or after they are taken. Distortion allows you to use the stylus to warp images. Graffiti lets you doodle or add word balloons of pictures. The Color lens will let you pick a color in your image and turn the rest of the image black and white while retaining the color you chose. Think Sin City. Color Pad will take a color of your choosing and swap it for another color and the Mirror lens splits the image in half and mirrors it on the other side. Mischief utilizes a feature recognition technology to add little cartoony mustaches and glasses. The feature recognition comes into play again with the Emoter lens which will change the look on a face from regular to happy or sad. The Morph lens lets you take two pictures (preferably of faces) and morph them together and the Resemblance lens will show you the similarities between two images. And finally, the Frame lens allows you to take a photo, erase part of it with the stylus creating a frame. You can then take another photo and fill in the empty area. This can be done repeatedly, giving the look of those things at the boardwalk where you put your face through a hole and get your picture taken with the body of a muscle guy or a girl in a bikini.

The music aspect of the DSi is as varied as the camera aspect. Not only can it play back your favorite AAC and M4I tunes (stored on the SD card), it's also equipped with a mini sound studio of sorts. Up to eighteen clips of ten seconds each can be recorded onto the DSi (more on the SD card of course) and then manipulated for pitch and speed separately. The speed and pitch changes can also be applied to your music as well as a few other filters like being able to remove the vocals. There is also a visualizer that uses kooky 8-bit graphics including a little motorcycle rider and even an old school looking Mario level. Music can be listened to while watching the visualizer or the lid can be closed and the DSi slipped in your pocket for music on the go.

The DSi is certainly a step up from the DS Lite and doubtless many folks will want to make the upgrade. All the new features are definitely worth the somewhat higher price tag and as long as you don't have a large GBA collection that you love to play then the DSi is going to meet all of your portable Nintendo gaming needs, and then some. The DSi officially launches in North America on April 5 and will retail for $169. My name is Fruit Brute and I approve of this new hardware.

Being able to listen to music with the lid closed and the DSi in your pocket does sound pretty nice. But, crappy resolution photos and a really REALLY cheap Photoshop-like program? Pass. I will wait for the DS2 to come out with all of these features all ready added in and then some.

Did anyone else get the Platinum invitations to try out the DSi? I got one for San Jose and think I'll go--just not sure which date? Any other SJ gamers going? I can bring a guest when I signup...

I'm going to skip commenting on the DSi for now because all I can think is "Good Lord, that man is sexy." Wait, that's too stalkerish...

I got the platinum invitation for San Fransisco, but I tried to RSVP, but registration was closed. It was only 4 hours after I had received the email.

*drools over DSi and Fruitbrute*

I reserved my dsi already. Anyone know of the size of SD cards memory wise it supports? Oh, and is it wrong to get a particular ds color to match with your outfit? Well, I DID JUST THAT! Blue all the way.

i gotta say, i was already excited for the dsi... but the fact that fruit brute is holding the blue color i preordered makes it all the more enticing. :P

oh, one side note about the nintendo point cards for use with the wii/ds shop channels: i've read a couple rumors that once you use a point card on one system, the remainder of the card can't be used on the other system. if you buy wiiware, you can't use the remainder to buy dsware items.

Haha, tis true of me too!

As for the DSi though, I'm not jumping on that ship until it has some actual games to be quite honest... [if such downloadable titles were being released via the DS and Wii then folks would be complaining!]
