GDC 09: Wii SD Card Support Explained

sdcardmenu.jpg

As NaviFairy told us earlier, launching just in time for Nintendo President Satoru Iwata's keynote speech is the feature we've all been waiting for: The ability to launch WiiWare, Channels and Virtual Console titles from SD Cards.

The system works by "temporarily" using system memory to store game data, which I guess means it's basically a batch process that copies the game to system memory, runs it, and then deletes it. Not the most elegant solution, but a much better one than what we have right now. The SD loader supports 20 pages of 12 channels, (240 channels in total) which certainly makes the system appealing. You are, however, required to keep your save games inside of system memory.

This great new feature has already launched, so feel free to toddle your little butts over to your Wii and load that puppy up!

This has made me a very happy man. No more must I delete and download to play something for an hour before doing it again.
