Mario & Sonic: The Rematch!

The first collaboration between SEGA and Nintendo, Mario & Sonic at the Olympics, was quite the sales success, but it appears that the rivalry has not yet been settled, because the two company mascots are going to go head to head yet again in the just-announced sequel, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games. Developed by SEGA of Japan under the watchful eye of Shigeru Miyamoto, the game will take gamers to Vancouver, Canada, home of the official 2010 Olympic Winter Games. Of course, since the actual games are going to be held in February of 2010, the game will be out in late 2009 in time for the holiday shopping season!
"SEGA has been a valued publishing partner of Nintendo for many years and Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games is the ultimate representation of that relationship," said Reggie Fils-Aime, president and COO, Nintendo of America. "We look for this game to continue the tradition its predecessor started by bringing new events, new characters, and new gameplay experiences to fans worldwide."
Since the original game was Summer Olympic sports, the sequel will feature all new events including Alpine Skiing and Speed Staking, with more events to be announced throughout the year. Naturally, the Wii and DS versions will each take advantage of their system's respective controls schemes, meaning waggle and touching, respectively. An interesting new wrinkle for Wii users will be the inclusion of the Wii Balance Board, which I assume will be used for skiiing-type games. So for those of you who bought Wii Fit only to have it collect dust while you eat bonbons, here's another reason to check the batteries in the Balance Board. The first game got middling reviews, so I avoided it, but maybe they'll have tweaked all the problems in time for the sequel. Winter Olympics is better anyway!

Another point in favor of winter sports: There's no winter running, thereby eliminating the heinous awkwardness of watching Mario somehow beat Sonic in a footrace.
