Will The New Mega Man Game Be Any Easier?

MMSF3_main_visual.jpg

Capcom has just announced that Mega Man Star Force 3 will be hitting the Nintendo DS in North America in the early summer of 2009. Hopefully, since it's an action-RPG instead of a punishing platformer, it might even be a game I'm able to play! Unfortunately, Mega Man has contracted a case of Pokémonitis, which causes perfectly reasonable game franchises to suddenly split into two separate games, usually titled after different colors. It's not the first time we've seen this, and I'm sure it won't be the last. MMSF3 will come in two versions: Black Ace and Red Joker, both of which have unique items and powers for the characters.

New to this sequel are "Noise Changes," which are random enhancements that change Mega Man's form and unlock new abilities. Each of the two versions of the game have over 100 unique Noise Types that can unlock elemental powers. The idea is to encourage players to explore the digital world of MMSF3 and collect 'em all. Oh, wait, no, that's the other series again. Sorry.

Since you've all been so good today, I'll put the whole press release and some screenshots after the jump. Don't say I never did anything nice for you!

THE BATTLE FOR THE DIGITAL WORLD CONTINUES IN MEGA MAN STAR FORCE 3 FOR NINTENDO DS

Black Ace and Red Joker Double the Possibilities

Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that Mega Man Star Force™ 3 (MMSF3) for Nintendo DS™ will be coming to North America in early summer 2009. MMSF3 will come in two different versions, Black Ace and Red Joker, allowing two friends to share unique items and powers utilizing the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection, enhancing their individual characters.

As in the previous games, MMSF3 is a unique blend of action and role-playing game (RPG), combining the high intensity combat that is the hallmark of Mega Man® games with Star Force's strategic battle system. By defeating enemies and boss characters, players earn "battle cards" that enhance and evolve Mega Man's abilities and attacks.

New to MMSF3 are "Noise Changes," random enhancements that change Mega Man's form and unlock new abilities. The two versions of the game, Black Ace and Red Joker, each have over 100 unique Noise Types that can be combined with Mega Man to unlock elemental powers based on earth, air, water and fire. The new Noise feature will add an exciting randomness to battles, encouraging players to explore, collect and battle across the digital world of MMSF3.

In MMSF3, players will travel between the physical world and the digital world via electromagnetic waves that form "wave roads." Geo Stelar, the protagonist of the game, can see these wave roads through usage of his unique "visualiser" tool. Once in the digital world, Geo can merge with the electronic life-form known as Omega-Xis to become Mega Man. The wave roads are being overrun by mysterious "noise" that change the player's environment and powers in different ways. This noise is being generated by an approaching gigantic meteor that threatens both the physical and digital worlds of MMSF3, forcing Geo Stellar and his crew to fight the oncoming threat to save two worlds. Fortunately, Mega Man discovers that he can control the Noise, using the new "Noise Change" system to transform into many different forms, including the ultimate "Black Ace" or "Red Joker" forms.

Does anyone remember Megaman Legends for the ps1?

That was a great game...

Are you mental? I'm sorry to be rude. I don't think people should be rude. But I mean, come on. "Will it be easier?". There are three in the Starforce series, and six in the Battle Network series. All you would have to do is play one of the eight games before it to know what this one will be like. This is NOT news.

Sorry. Technically, the news is that Capcom has announced another game in the series, including a handful of screenshots and concept art. But to just say that is kind of dry. I'm sorry if the angle I took with the story wasn't to your liking. I wasn't feeling terribly creative last night. I suppose I should've played up the Pokémonitis angle. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20, right?

It's all good. Still love 90% of the site posts! I'd just like to see less "news that isn't news".

I used to love Megaman, he used to be pretty dang close to the center of my universe. Now he is more like a distant star (or Katamari, same difference). Used to love the NES games, liked some of the SNES games, liked the Legends series a little more, though the camera controls were pretty bad. I beat Battle Network 1, but found the rest in that series increasingly less interesting and less playable. I didn't bother with Star Force, because while I could stomach the plot device I couldn't stomach the graphics.

To me, Megaman is a lot like other people's Batman or Superman... when he is done well I'm really happy, but unfortunately he has been done poorly a lot as of late. I just look at the pretty illustrations. Me be pretty like Megaman one day :D

Ugh, I'm such a sucker for all these games. They're my greatest weakness. I can rationally admit the gameplay, graphics and story are all sub-par, but that doesn't stop me from buying each installment and jumping into each (extremely repetitive) network or EM wave adventure.

Someone could make a killing off me if they got a cardboard cut-out of Mega Man and wrote "THE POWER OF FRIENDSHIP" on it somewhere; I would just throw money at it all day.

Sach, agreed.

But I think the Mega Man Star Force series gets more whining from people who haven't played it than necessary.

Not one single review I read about Star Force 2 mentioned that it was the first game in the series to have ONLINE PVP and a mail server to send items to your in-game friends without having to be online at the same time.

Nor is anyone noticing that the noise customization system probably means the people you face in online PVP will be more uniquely customized, rather than always facing off against Mega Man-looking players. (I know it says the noise is random, but it's hard to imagine there won't be an equipable item later in the game that lets you start at 50% transformation, like there is in other two Star Force games)

Also, considering this is the 10th (ish) and final installment in a 7-year-old franchise, I hope it has some closure. I really loved the way Battle Network 6's plot tied together all the plots of the previous games. The only loose end missing is Duo, I hope that's addressed in Star Force 3.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
