New Year's EVE Residents Set Record

eve_online.jpg

No, I'm not talking about the folks of Time Square setting a new record on the amount of champagne consumed within a few city blocks, or the amount of trash left in the streets the next day. I'm talking about the residents of New Eden in the MMO EVE Online. It turns out that with the recent New Year that the users of the 5,000 Solar System universe set a new record with online concurrent users: 45,186. In an article put out by the CCP they had this to say about the event:

What a great way to start out 2009 -- a new PCU (Peak Concurrent User) record of 45,186! While we've made tremendous serverside changes in the EVE Online infrastructure with the EVE64 and StacklessIO initiatives, it is truly a testament to our loyal fans that 5 years into EVE's existence we are still breaking records and more people are flying in New Eden than ever before. We know we'll be trying to find leftover champagne from New Year's EVE to celebrate. When we do, we'll toast to you!

I know that with WoW having more than 9 million users, 45,186 users doesn't seem like much, but the truth is that on a single WoW 'realm' they have many less users active (probably around 10k-20k), that's why WoW has a few hundred realms. EVE, on the other hand, only has one universe, and all players play together, which does build more of a sense of community among all of the users. I'm glad to see that EVE is constantly pushing the envelope when it comes to trying to build a game on a platform that can support so many users. Maybe in the future of MMOs one server for millions of users will be a possibility, and I'll use my New Year's champagne glass to toast to that. . . is it wrong that I still have it full and in my hands 5 days afterward? Cheers!

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
