Video: 1up's First Times
Everyone's got a first time right? Just thinking about it brings me back to that clumsy yet incredible feeling of discovering something equal parts painful, naughty, and exciting all at once. No, I'm not talking about that first time! I'm talking about first time a game made me cry and other probing "first time" questions that the 1up staffers directed at some of the most recognizable faces in gaming. In their first First Times special, you'll hear which game almost drove former Team Ninja boss Tomonobu Itagaki to quit game development, what game Will Wright wishes he had created first, and what makes Rez's master of music rhythm cry.
Even though I understand where Cliffy B's answer comes from, the spoilerific "not the ending" shocker in Shadow of the Colossus made me tear up a bit. Ico and the end of Metal Gear Solid 3 get honorable mentions in that department. As for which game I wish I had designed (or gotten a chance to help create), I would have to say that it's a tie between LucasArts classic LOOM or 2D shooter Soldat, if only to make it look a little nicer. One question that I would have loved to see the 1up guys ask would be "What's the first game you can remember playing?" For me, the earliest gaming memory I have is playing Apple IIe staple Karateka. What I wouldn't give for a faithful adaptation of that game on PSN/XBLA complete with bullheaded karate masters to beat up. *sigh*

The only times I've ever cried at a video game were out of frustration. The ending of Klonoa 1 came a little close, though.
The first game that transcended simple the "video game" label for me was probably Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.
I was so engrossed and completely involved in Azrael's story that i screamed bloody murder at the cliffhanger ending.
But then after i got over the ending, i realized just how awesome the game really is/was. The combination of the writing, the originality of the plot and the phenomenal voice acting culminated in one of the first cinematic gaming experiences i ever had.
At first i was going to go on about how Final Fantasy 7 rocked, but then i realized that Soul reaver had one thing that FF7 sorely lacked: voice acting. Other wise FF7 is just as good.
I'll shut up, now...:-)
First Cry: Ending of Final Fantasy X
First Complete Disbelief: THAT Death in Chrono Trigger
First Victory Dance: Beating Bowser in Super Mario Bros.
I cant remember if it was the end of Metal Gear Solid 3 or the Perfect Ending in FFX2. Man Yuna can really pull at my heart strings. But those two made me cry.
First time I cried from a game:
Final Fantasy 7
That was probably the first cinematic game I played, and the death in that was so unexpected to someone like me as I've never played anything like that before. For some reason I've missed out on every single RPG on the SNES (Final Fantasy I-VI, Chrono Trigger etc).
First Victory Dance:
Zelda I
Classic. A Link to the Past is a much better game, but I remember as a kid how impressed I was at being able to complete that.
First time I cried over a game: Final Fantasy 9 - the ending cinematics. FFX2 did that for me as well.
First time I could have killed over a game: Super Mario 3, when Princess thought she was being funny with that classic line.
First game I ever played: Pac-Man, Atari 2600.
