They're Back: The Great Giana Sisters

Many retro gaming enthusiasts long for modern adaptations to their most adored games of yesteryear. Sometimes publishers and developers are able to make the dreams of hardcore fans come true by updating an old favorite. More often than not, Earthbound fans are left in the cold for eternity. Proving that a game doesn't have to abide by every copyright law on the book or be fondly remembered by most to begin with, The Great Giana Sisters are coming back on the DS whether you like it or not. Slated for a release July next year, DTP Entertainment and Spellbound Entertainmnet will take players through more than 80 levels of "totally not the same thing as Super Mario Bros." fun. The screenshots released so far don't look too shabby and will strike a powerful chord of nostalgia for readers who remember the original Commodore 64 classic. Hopefully, this will get released at a budget price and include the original title as nice bonus.
Ok, so it's not Bionic Commando or Kid Icarus, but the original title deserves a little bit of respect for cranking out some great music (that's still being sampled today) even if it bares more than a passing resemblance to a certain pair of Italian plumbers. But hey, the thought of seeing Giana and Maria with their totally rad power-up mohawks again just makes me smile.
