Play Greenhouse Games, Feel Triumph-ant

Greenhouse Games, the downloadable independent game portal started by Penny Arcade's creators, announced that as part of their new Nitrogen Software Development Kit, game makers will be able to add Triumphs and Standings to their titles. Much like XBL's Achievements or PSN's Trophies, Triumphs are an arbitrary way to compare your particular gaming accomplishments in various titles with your friends. It's not clear how these will be tracked on Greenhouse quite yet, but I'm sure they will be very important and useful in the future.
Users who download Penny Arcade Adventures: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, Episode Two via Greenhouse will be the first to get a chance to rack up Triumphs. It's also worth noting that Greenhouse allows Mac and Linux users a chance at the fun.
So off the top of my head, Microsoft, Sony, Steam, Blizzard, and now Greenhouse have jumped on the achievement bandwagon, as well as more I'm probably forgetting. The person who can come up with a way to smoosh them all into a giant über-tracking system will probably make a fortune. Just the other day, my friend and I were talking about how we're not sure if these sorts of things will be a flash in the pan and gone in a few generations, or if they'll end up following us around for the rest of our lives. I picture groups of old folks, standing around the home comparing gamerscores, telling stories of the times we managed to 5-Star all the songs in Guitar Hero on expert. "You young whippersnappers don't know what an achievement is, why in my day..."
By the way, anyone commenting on this post will get 5 Gaygamer.net Pretty Princess PointsTM, which are not tracked in any way and cannot be traded (legally) for goods and services. But if it makes you feel better, feel free to print out this page and carry it around in your wallet.
