First DSi Exclusive Game Revealed

warioware_ds.jpg

It seems like whenever Nintendo develops some kind of new gaming technology, they like to show how fun it is by creating a WarioWare game for it. Tilt sensors in a GBA cart? Touch screen control? Waggle? Why not? So it should come as absolutely no surprise that when Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata revealed a bunch of upcoming WarioWare titles, one of them would be exclusive to the DSi, taking advantage of the new handheld's unique capabilities.

Apparently, some minigames from the GBA and DS installments will be made available as downloadable content for the DSi, but there will also be some original games using the DSi's camera which will be packaged as WarioWare: Photograph. Iwata explained that gamers will put their DSi on a table and step back until they appear on-screen, at which point the camera will act like the EyeToy and register movement to complete the games. This sounds clever until you realize that you can't move too far back or else you won't be able to see the tiny screens. WarioWare: Photograph is currently scheduled for release in late December, when the DSiWare store goes live.

There's also a regular DS game scheduled called WarioWare Myself, which actually lets players create their own minigames to share with other players. That sounds much more interesting, and less like a gimmick. Nintendo is also working on a WiiWare version of this game to let players try out their created games on their consoles, but it won't have the minigame creation tool. Just playing, no creating.

Iwata also revealed plans for other DSi product, like a series of six DSiWare ArtStyle puzzle games, and applications like a clock, calculator or public transit maps. This is all well and good, but with all these extra features, the DSi is practically a new platform, and eventually full games will be released for the system, leaving DS users feeling left out. I don't want to have to upgrade yet!

HOnestly? I can't wait to upgrade. I wish Nintendo would have just made the step and made this a new platform, but whatever. This looks awesome, and I am an addict of Wario Ware titles. These sound amazing. Next year is going to be so great for Nintendo.

Less like a gimmick? The whole of premise of wario ware that it's just gimmicky. I think the idea of a wario ware that's less like a gimmick sounds more like a fail.
