Rumorama: EA Forum Bans Potentially Lock Down Games

ea.jpg

If there is anything that could start a mass of outrage fans, it is overzealous moderation. Who hasn't witnessed a forum flame war? I know I've seen more than my fair share. Now it has been discovered that being a forum abuser could potentially lead to a global EA software ban for some users. Moderator 'eeapoc' (Apparently, C&C Community Manager Aaron Kaufman) recently posted this on the support forums in regards to the EA master account setup:

Your forum account will be directly tied to your Master EA Account, so if we ban you on the forums, you would be banned from the game as well since the login process is the same. And you'd actually be banned from your other EA games as well since its all tied to your account. So if you have SPORE and Red Alert 3 and you get yourself banned on our forums or in-game, well, your SPORE account would be banned to. It's all one in the same, so I strongly recommend people play nice and act mature.

All in all, we expect people to come on here and abide by our ToS. We hate banning people, it makes our lives a lot tougher, but its what we have to do.

Those banned will stay banned, but like most other internet services, its not that hard to create a new fake e-mail account. However, its a lot harder to get a new serial key =)

It is pretty safe to say that this would only limit the online ability of some games. I'm sure this is going to result in some angry users. Honestly, as someone who has had to deal with this stuff before, it is nice to see consequences associated to online activity. Nothing helps limit the appeal of anonymous asshattery like a good old-fashioned banning. My advice, just behave.

Excellent, from the little I've seen the EA forums are a beehive of idiocy, whatever stops them poisoning things I like is excellent in my book, and feel a lot of companies should adopt a similar stance.

Imagine how much better Counter-Strike/TF2 would be if they banned all the retards from the Steam forums?

This is ridiculous at best. This would, in fact, render single player games that require activation useless. Since when is my ability to play a game determined by whether or not I'm nice?

Would it be fair to say that EA would have the right to confiscate your xbox360 or ps3 game discs if you act like a jerk? That's essentially what they're doing.

Combined with their punishing DRM, this only shows that EA thinks that treating customers like criminals is ok.

If a forum user is a jerk and violates forum rules, they should be banned...and leave it at that. They may not be the only one playing the game. What if 15 year old Johnny is a jerk on the forum and gets banned? And now 13 year old Suzie and 12 year old frank can't play spore any more?

I can see the ban applying to multiplayer game matches on EA run servers...but not to a single player game or private multiplayer matches.

Of course, if you're not prevented from activating and using your single player games...then I'll eat my words.

From what it sounds like (I am sure we willhear followup clarification shortly) that single player activation will not be connected with this. If it is expect big lawsuit. It seems that it is just tied to the multiplayer elements. If that is the case I support it.

SZK said:

Kudos to EA; I wish this would become the norm for all multiplayer games. There are far too many jerks shielded by the veil of anonymity, and far too few companies who are actually willing to sacrifice the profits yielded by these jerks, to make the gaming environment better for everyone else.

Of course...bitching about the crappy DRM will also get you banned. DRM that I might add is more trouble then its worth.

The solution to DRM.

Bearing in mind, my biggest, most important game of the year is Red Alert 3, Red Alert 2 been my favourite game of all time, and easily most played.

Pirate it, I'm downloading RA3 now, the more sales they lose, they will eventually yield, the cycle will hurt companies incredibly, but eventually they'll just yield to demand for no DRM.

They'll get more and more draconian and sell less and less, and eventually they'll just stop.

I would have bought Spore, Red Alert 3, Mass Effect and Bioshock for PC, absolutely no questions had they not been DRM poisoned. It's a shame the only way to make a statement is get the game anyway without paying, which is a shame as I really want to support developers.

I won't support been made to feel a criminal for legally purchasing software.

"That said, the previous statement I made recently (that's being quoted on the blogs) was inaccurate and a mistake on my part. I had a misunderstanding with regards to our new upcoming forums and website and never meant to infer that if we ban or suspend you on the forums, you would be banned in-game as well. This is not correct, my mistake, my bad. "
