Nintendo DS Has Officially Left The GBA In The Dust

gbads.jpg

Nintendo released another one of its glowing financial result reports with the typical high sales and glowing numbers, but with a surprise for longtime Nintendo fanboys. Sure, you have statistics like Wi Fit selling 8.7 million copies worldwide (which seems impressive until they also mention that Nintendogs has sold over 20 million!), and that the Wii console has shipped 34.55 million hardware units and 229.85 million software units worldwide. But it's the Nintendo DS that's really pulling out all the stops. It's not enough that it has shipped 454.63 million units of software across the globe. No, with 84.33 million DS units shipped worldwide, Nintendo's latest portable gaming system has actually surpassed the 81.36 million Game Boy Advances out there. Crazy.

I'll be curious to see how the DSi does in the next statement. Because while the DS to DS Lite was a mild upgrade, the DSi is almost a completely new machine. It'll either sell like gangbusters or fans will be annoyed that they're being asked to upgrade so soon. (I know which way I feel!)

I'm annoyed, don't plan on getting the DSi. Region locked games is failtastic.

What sucks is that one of my D.S. games uses the GBA slot for a card reader. The ultimate dealbreaker though is the region locks. Sorry, no deal.

Wow, that's pretty amazing, considering the GameBoy series include the gameboy, color gameboy, gameboy color, all of the pokemon packs, the gameboy advance and its iterations.

I'm sure, like the gameboy, the DSlite isn't going away, so if you want backwards compatibility (for a console now two generations old) you can just buy a DSlite.

And, as much as I don't like it, region locking the downloadable games is a necessity because of licensing problems across various countries. A game that was never licensed for release in the US (Cho Aniki) will have different licensing (and royalty) agreements than a game that was (Duck Tales).

Hi Hephaestus,

I may be wrong, but if you look at the story, I think it is saying that the DS/DS Lite combo has now surpassed the Gameboy Advance/GameboyAdvance SP combo--not all Gameboy systems combined.

As for the DSi--I have to disagree with Wootini. To me the DS Lite was a lot more of an upgrade than is the DSi. The "additions" the DSi brings are all pretty meaningless to me. It's all a matter of what people like I guess.

Meh, the region locking is only for DSi Ware isn't it?
