Mega Man 9 Getting Proto Man DLC

I wonder if the idea of DLC was even a glimmer in the eyes of developers when the Mega Man series ruled the NES. No matter: although the concept of additional downloadable content seems to betray the game's adherence to a retro presentation, the upcoming Mega Man 9 will be getting an extra playable character in the form of Proto Man, Mega Man's tortured older "brother" with a fashionable neckerchief.
Coming the week of October 6th, Proto Man will cost basically $2 across all platforms: 200 Wii Points, 160 Microsoft Points, and $1.99 on PSN, at least in the United States. Looks like Sony's got the bargain! Expect pricing in other countries to be along the same lines. Proto Man offers players the ability to slide and charge blasts, and can deflect most small shots with his shield. Getting hit will knock Proto Man back twice as far as his kid brother, as well as interrupting any charge shot he was working on. There's no news on whether the additional content will affect Achievements or Trophies on XBLA and PSN. There's also a promise of more DLC news in the future, so as long as you're not rigidly stuck in the past, Mega Man 9 should have some life beyond defeating the same robot masters a couple of times.
Mega Man 9 - Proto Man DLC on the way [GamesRadar]

I feel like it would be reasonable to expect a downloadable Roll, but I'd be even more interested to see what Bass would look like translated into the style of the 8-bit games.
Yaaaay! *whistles the Proto Man theme*
At first, I rather put off by the thought of being charged extra to play a slightly different character, but then I realized that this is basically equivalent to a "collector's edition" of MM9. (Well, except that in this case I'm actually interested in the bonus materials.)
I thought that Proto Man was an odd name when he was first introduced, but it beats his Japanese name, Blues. (Yes, I know that Blues goes along with the music related names of the series: Rock & Roll, Blues, Beat, Rush, Treble, Bass, etc.)
DLC a week or two yonder the game; why wasn't it included?
Argh, I hate how the Japanese totally misunderstand the concept of DLC. Maybe it's a result of them wanting to have "everything ready before execution".
That's not a bad bit of DLC. But, what I'm really hoping for is new Rush transformations and extra levels.
