Wootini's Weekly Wii Fit Update: The Final Chapter

Well, this is it. My final entry in my weekly Wii Fit update. Probably the most in-depth review we've ever done here at Gay Gamer! I bought the game on launch day, and set out to see just how much weight you can lose playing Wii Fit. As it turns out, quite a bit, actually. Turns out all those people who said the secret to losing weight is to eat less and exercise more... well, they were right!
On launch day, May 19, my first weigh in on the Balance Board was 184.1 pounds. And after playing Wii Fit for 84 days, I now weigh in at 158.7 pounds! That's a grand total of 25.4 pounds gone! Here, you see the image I used when I first started this experiment. To see how I look now (and with a haircut and shave), make the jump!

So there you go. I didn't take a "before" picture to put side-by-side with this "after" image, because I didn't want a photo of my pasty, soft midsection floating around the Interwebs. But if you compare it to the photo at the beginning of this article, you can clearly see even just the weight I've lost in my face. And I promise you, my stomach didn't look nearly this toned when I started either. Of course, these results aren't exactly typical, because I played Wii Fit more than your average gamer might. But I promise you that the results you see pictured here are from playing Wii Fit, and only that. The only additional exercising I ever did was occasionally taking a long walk during my lunch hour to get out of the office, and once in a while doing some extra push-ups because my upper body is extra pathetic. The whole point of the experiment was to see what kind of results you could get from using Wii Fit as your only means of exercise.
Every morning, I would wake up an extra half-hour earlier than I used to and get in somewhere around 20 minutes of Wii Fit (minus 10 minutes of warming up and navigating menus and such). And then sometimes in the evening, I would watch TV or a DVD and instead of sitting on the couch the whole time, I would actually run for 30 minutes in Wii Fit instead. My routine was pretty much warm up, weigh in, then do 60 or 90 seconds of the Plank exercise, then 30 reps of Jackknifes, followed by 20 reps of Push-up and Side Plank. Then I would do 10 minutes of Free Run at a reasonably fast pace. Occasionally, I would also do 6 reps of Torso Twists and/or 30 reps of Single-Leg Twists, because those are supposed to work your abs. Then on weekends, I might add in a few extra exercises at random, including some yoga. But for the most part, I kind of ignored the yoga. Also on weekends, I would do the Jackknife and Plank challenges, because those would take longer, and I didn't have time on weekday mornings.
That was pretty much my workout routine, and I only missed a couple days here and there when I had to go out of town. Otherwise, I was pretty religious about playing Wii Fit every single morning when I first got up for at least 20 minutes or so. And at the same time, I watched what I ate. Basically what that means is I simply ate less of what I would normally eat, exercising some portion control and not going back for seconds, while at the same time trying to eat less junk. Not that I cut soda or candy or cookies out entirely, because if you deprive yourself of something, I believe it just makes you want it more. But I definitely tried to ease back.
What I found surprising about Wii Fit was that I pretty much used it as a workout video. I'd thought the balance games would be the way that the game would trick you into working out, much like Wii Sports had you playing tennis and boxing until you broke a sweat, trying to beat the high score. I also thought I would be more interested in the yoga. But instead, I pretty much stuck to a few of my favorite strength exercises and a couple aerobic exercises. The hula hoops were good in the beginning, but in the end, the Free Run was the best cardio workout Wii Fit offers. The Step is pretty useless, even as a warm-up, although the Rhythm Boxing is fun enough that I sometimes will throw it in just for variety's sake. But I never got into the balance games, even though I'm sure playing them would've helped me with my balance. Every time you weigh in, it also checks your center of balance, and I've never been able to get it at a perfect 50-50. Although to be fair, I have gotten to 49.9 and 50.1 percent, so that's awful close!
I do wish there were more exercises for the upper body included in the game. Pretty much all you get are the Push-up and Side Plank, the Push-up Challenge, and the Tricep Extensions. A couple variations on the ab crunches would've been nice, too. But I guess they had to save something to refine for Wii Fit 2, right? If anyone from Nintendo's reading this, I'd also like to have more variety in the background music, and the option to string together exercises into a routine so you don't have to waste time navigating the menus. If the game also would like to suggest workout routines based on what you'd like to focus on (abs, arms, etc.), that would be even better. Also, if you'd like to bundle Wii Fit 2 with a special add-on for the Balance Board to snap into that raises it up a little higher, it would make the step exercises much more effective. Just a thought!
As I wrote in an earlier entry, according to the somewhat sketchy Body Mass Index, my ideal weight should be around 145 pounds. And since I haven't weighed that since high school or even before, I doubt I'll ever reach it. I'll be happy if I can get myself around 155. Or slightly under. And to that end, I've bought myself a pair of good running sneakers (with the help of my very knowledgeable and fit friend), and intend to take up actual jogging. I'm still too cheap to join a gym, but I figured interspersing my Wii Fit workouts with a morning jog every other day or so would make for better results. I definitely will continue playing Wii Fit every morning, even if it's just to do some crunches and push-ups, because the results I have achieved have made me feel better both physically and mentally. I haven't felt comfortable shirtless in ages. I would like to thank Nintendo and Miyamoto for changing my life. This experiment was a success, and isn't over yet. Not by a long shot! (I want to see if I can get my stomach even flatter than this!)

Nice work, Woot!
Cool beans about the weight lost and the good experience. I prefer free weights, but now I almost wish I didn't ditch my Wii!
You're joking right? That's like photoshoped here, right? No... you must of paid an Abercrombie & Fitch here! That can't be you there!
I mean, Wow! Just Wow!
Umm, hello! Very handsome...I'm so impressed!
Damn it. You did very well for yourself. I wasted my entire summer and gained 5 or 6 pounds because I had no job (Over 11 applications got me nowhere, and this being rural West Virginia, I couldn't date because there was no one good looking or even socially relatable around, further exacerbated by some questionable bumper stickers and even shirts regarding their attitude toward homosexuals overall, so I had little reason to stay in shape. I used to walk close to 2 miles everyday making deliveries early in the morning, so without the reward of money or the potential to date, so went my fairly slim body. Now that I am going to live on-campus at college very soon, I will workout everyday for a month before I even consider dating (for the first time, and without the fear of being shot at!), and I am glad that you got your, and others', ideal body in so short a time. Keep going.
Dude, seriously: Congratulations. Impressive work, and even more impressive dedication.
Hats off to you. Shirts off too, apparently. Well done.
Nice work.
We have a GayGamer centerfold on our hands.
I demand more images of writers in various states of undress.
Very impressive.
Congratulations!
Now that's inspiration to finally use my Wiifit
Fantasic results, Wootini. You've actually inspired me to get back into fitness and proper nutrition.
Wow... that is absolutely inspiring. I admit to giving up after I went away on a week trip to see my boyfriend and not being able to exercise during that time. That and being a woman meant you saw much more fluctation in the day-to-day week-to-week weigh ins.
I also sold mine when somebody offered me a hefty sum, though to be fair I learned so much from it that I felt I could do well on my own without it and just keep a pen and paper journal.
Kudos to you, you desrve it.
yay woots! big hugs, so proud of your conviction and drive to stick with it. i hope you did all for you and not just your love of video games :P
Wow. It's like that Will & Grace episode with Karen's cousin or whoever he was. Congrats!
Woah! Holy crap. That's REALLY you? Amazing! I really admire your drive and determination. You know what? I am tottaly going to go buy Wii Fit now.
On a bit of a tangential note, I hope this series (and hot photos!) get lots of exposure! Gay Gamer doesn't have the huge readership of some other sites, like 4cr (which had it's own Wii Fit journal thingie), and it would be a shame if a million bazillion people didn't get to see this.
Also, *drool* SCREW George Clooney and Brad Pitt. I have a new candidate for Sexiest Man Alive.
WOW! Just wow, your story is inspiring if not... >.> A little jealous. I need to hit the gym again. Props and kudos and ...
Wow congratusuperhotguyulations!
Congrats man. You look amazing (and yummy). I personally refuse to drop 80 on Wiitfit as I doubt I'll use it never, just like my Wii.
I did buy one of those dumb balls tonight though and try to shed my final pounds. Down 43 so far this year. Have 20 more to lose.
Wowza! Teh hawtness!
I experience similar weight-lose splendor through a video game. I lost 85 pounds playing Pump it Up(DDR with 5 buttons). I worked at an arcade, so I got to play for free... Turning exercise into something fun and competitive really was the secret to losing all the weight. Now my legs are phenomenal... Just sayin, lol

You're gorgeous. Plain and simple. Of course, you were certainly handsome before, but now you must feel so amazing about yourself and your body.
Well done. Congrats! I'm gonna go get on my WiiFit now. I feel kinda tubby after looking at your pics for a while.
Just joining in the celebration, that was certainly unexpected, but well worth it. You should watermark that image before Nintendo use it in a commercial without your permission ^^

dude, awesome!! i used to do dance dance revolution as my workout everyday, was fun, didn't see any results except for a sore ass, (no i didn't do THAT, pervs) now i really wanna invest in a Wii, since it seems the only way i can do exercises is through video games hehe
I think someone craves the adulation of the masses.
I havn't even worn out the batteries that came in the box yet! But this has convinced me to try out out some of the Wiifit exercises on the days that I don't go to the gym.
Congrats, weight loss is easy in theory (eat less, exercise more) but tough in practice. Feel pride, and don't backslide!
Oh, wow. I wish I could say something smart, but all I'm thinking right now is (lustful gargling noises)...
That is all.
Um, wow. Firstly, you're hot. And secondly, this has inspired me to get back to the daily Wii Fit routine I had the first 2 weeks I owned the thing. Thanks so much for the weekly updates -- I'll miss them!
That's pretty awesome :D Congrats!
That is very inspiring. You look fantastic, thank you for all of your post. I've lost 15 so far with wii fit and running :) reading your articles helped remind me to stay focused :) thank you again!
Damn you and your wii fit success story. I've been ducking and dodging the wii (pun intended) for a while now. Now I have to get one.
I'll be moving in with the boyfriend this month, and he has a wiifit, tho he hasn't cracked it open yet. I'll be definitely starting it now! Especially since I haven't been to the gym in 3 weeks!
Nice going!!
YAY! Congrats Chris. You look so good!!! I'll hopefully see you at the next meetup.
Wow, that is amazing! You look great, Chris! I need to start exercising more if that's the result! I walk a mile a day, and my legs look good...it's the rest that needs work. Too bad I don't have room to spread out in my house with Wiifit...I need it!
I'm really happy for you that all the hard work paid off...you look radiant, and younger!
Excellent!
Well, damn. It works!
Niiice!
Congrats Wootini. You've always been a cutie to me, but now you're definitely a stud! Thanks for sharing your journey with us. You're an inspiration. Cheers!
Wow. To say I'm stunned at the amazing results is an understatement. You worked hard and should be happy with the results (and I'm guessing you are, especially based on everyone else's positive agreement)
NO WAY!!! OMG!! Congradulations!!!
Wootini, you are my idol.
I've kept wiifit-ing as well, though not as often and as serious as you have. I definately feel healthier, even if I haven't lost the weight you have, I do notice an improvement in my muscles and balance, and also watching what I eat as well. And I promise you I could've never done any of this without wiifit - unless I were to have a heart attack or serious health problems arise.
Anyway, enough about that. Wootini, you kick serious butt, and as someone said earlier, *everyone* on every gaming site needs to see this, gay or not! :)
-m.
That's a great pic! Oh and it's not photoshopped, that's exactly how he looked at the beach. Now I must catch up and hit up the wii fit daily...
YAY! WOW! You know, you're my very favoritist person on this site :D Very great job, congrats, congrats, congrats!
woa baby, so sexy although you've been pretty handsome this whole time. Hit me up if you're in SF lets play Pong.
Rawr, you look great and healthy! Must have taken a lot of guts to do a project like this so publicly, great job!
