Rumorama: PS3 2.5 Firmware... Screencaps?

Sony_XMB.jpg

Speculation about what the next PS3 firmware is going to do is becoming somewhat of a popular internet pastime. This was especially true with the in game XMB and DivX support. Now both of these features have rolled out and we're left to ponder, aside from Home, what's next from Sony?

Sources say "Screenshots". This is not the official word from Sony, nor will they even admit to a 2.5 firmware being in production. Honestly, I don't know what use it would be. Sure, taking stills of doing crazy tricks would be fun, but that's just it, it would be a novelty. Showing friends pictures of you tea-bagging them in Call of Duty, photos of your car exploding in Burnout Paradise, etc... the amusement would quickly wear off. Especially since anyone who has recently been pwned will know better than to accept an inbound picture message from a "friend".

As a video game blogger, I can see some use in taking a photo for use with articles. I guess it's just a matter of seeing what the general public does with it. Then again, this is all still up in the air.

I think it could be very useful, exactly for what you mentioned, to show off things that you've done in game. Video would be sweeter, but screen caps can show off how you might have customized your character(s) [or vehicles or whatevs] and could be great for tutorials on how to do tricks/stunts or just showing funky bugs or weird, quirky, or just plain funny things you might come across in a game. It isn't all about 'splosions and pwning n00bz, but it might be cool to show your friends your hot Soul Calibur IV character or prove that you managed to get to some secret area in a game.

Everything on teh intarwebz is moving more and more towards a social networking type atmosphere. In fact, one of the main draws of Singstar is having that youtube/social networking quality of posting vids of yourself online to share with your friends. Facebook and MySpace let you share photos, so why not have that on the PS3 as well, with a convenient way to show off your games in-game.

sony have had 8 years since the launch of the PS2 to think about all the neat ideas, gadgets and applications they could add to their next console.... yet they constantly roll out crappy updates to improve the service?!?

To me it seems like they trawl through the forums and see what people want and what they should add to the next update. "look, Timmy would like an in game XMB"

Maybe I'm being a little unfair as I know that Microsoft and even Ninty are doing the same kinda stuff (although it does seems not to the same extent). I think it comes from the whole controller fiasco "its this shaped, now its back to the old style. lets take out rumble as it is our choice. lets add motion control like nintendo and say thats why we took out rumble. lets bring back rumble as if nothing happened and hopefully they wont see through our lies" etc etc

SuperSaiyanSamueru couldn't agree with you more.
It's all about money in the end and not about (customer)our satisfaction.
Sony couldn't care less about our wish lists for the next firmware upgrades.
I've been seeing a video playlist request for ages on the forums and nothing happened in that respect yet. I doubt they even check the forums for that.
In such a big company like Sony as in all other big companies, burocracy kills everything and mixed responsability makes technical decisions to be taken by incompetent people.

So for all you guys that bought a PS3 including myself, stop wining about what you want it to do. Those that should hear you are either deaf, incompetent or couldn't care less.

And girls who like girls who like rumble packs!
