Is Sackboy Sony's Next Mascot?

I'll admit that Sackboy is pretty cute, and I understand that Sony is hoping that LittleBigPlanet is going to move some consoles, but is Sackboy the unlikeliest mascot you've ever heard of or what? Who knows, maybe it's so crazy it just might work. Then again, remember Polygon Man?
"We want 'LittleBigPlanet' to lead the charge into a new genre of gaming and turn Sackboy into the next emblematic character for the PS3," Mark Valledor, product marketing manager for the game at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said in an e-mail interview. "We have coined 2008 'the year of the PS3' and are confident that with the launch of "LittleBigPlanet," we will continue to see the momentum build throughout the end of this year and on to the next. ... This is a very big title for us."
As our own Fruit Brute reported, there are two different downloadable Sackboy characters available Kratos and Nariko but which character you get depends entirely upon which retailer you pre-order with. Sony is also creating buzz with around 1,000 "LittleBig billboards" that they're planning to plant in the ground around San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York. These elaborate yard signs will have working lights and ladders and whatnot, but their small size will also make them easy targets for thieves. However, Sony isn't concerned, as they feel fans selling stolen billboards on eBay will just create more buzz.
I'm going to be keeping a very close eye on this one, because as yet there is still no PS3 system seller for me, and I'm still waiting for the game that'll get me to pony up the dough for Sony's latest console. I'm not big on sim games, and I'm not sure that LittleBigPlanet is as accessible to casual gamers as it's being touted, so I remain skeptical. We'll just have to wait and see...
