EA Partners With Suda 51, Epic Games

GMHlogo2white.jpg

I just got back from EA's Summer Showcase where amongst the myriad sports games on display, they found time to drop some interesting news. The behemoth game company announced two new partnerships that will be sure to get people talking.

First and foremost, EA will be teaming with Suda 51's Grasshopper Manufacture (Killer 7, No More Heroes) to create a new IP. The unnamed horror title will be produced by Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami and directed by Suda 51 himself. Suda and Mikami San were on hand for the announcement but unfortunately all they could say is that the title would be "dark, scary and exciting." The game will launch for the PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and PC. With the mad genius of Suda/Mikami and the money backing of EA, I must say I am more than intrigued!

The second partnership will be with Epic Games of Gears of War and Unreal Tournament III fame. It will launch on the PS3, Xbox 360 and the PC although no title or genre was announced. Knowing Epic Games it will be something filled with large guns and excesses of testosterone.

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't quite get why this Suda 51 guy is apparently so revered. Killer7 was probably one of the worst games I played in the previous console generation. Still, new horror games are almost always a good thing, so here's hoping that this turns out well!

The combination of the talent involved here amazes me. The press release also mentions that Q Entertainment (Lumines, Meteos, etc.) is also part of this collaboration.

@ Keith: Suda 51's games tend to be the "Love it or loathe it" kind. With No More Heroes being the most accessible game he's made to date, there are plenty of people that don't like the style of writing, humor, or gameplay that tends to poke up in each Grasshopper release. While Killer7's gameplay was odd and off putting for some, the David Lynch-ian storytelling was something that I hadn't seen to that extreme since the old days of WARP (D, Enemy Zero, etc.). There's plenty to love there, but there's also plenty that can get in the way of it also.
