PS3 2.40 Firmware Live: XMB, Trophies And A Few Hiccups!
As many of you are aware, the PS3 2.40 Firmware went live today. I happened to be awake past midnight, so I patched relatively late (early) in the evening before I went to bed. After three failed attempts at downloading the firmware (stopped at 42%, 51% and 40%) I finally managed to get the bugger installed. My impressions? Totally worth it.
The in-game XMB is exactly what most of you would have expected. Essentially it allows you to access all the stuff you normally would from the main menu, in game. Nothing was left off. The big trick is that occasionally certain menu options like starting new software will ask you if you wish to quit what you are currently doing first. No real shocker.
The new trophy system, well, I didn't really get to play with that much. I don't own a single title that has in game trophies (yet). Hopefully I'll be able to screw with this in the next few weeks if they roll up updates for the handful of games I do own.
Now, before you all get too excited, I feel obligated to tell you that there have been a few instances of brickage taking place. There have been a few reported incidents of freezing consoles and failure to reboot during the install process. No word from Sony yet on this problem.

My PS3 (60 GB - the best, IMHO with the PS2 hardware) keeps saying I'm on the latest version of the firmware - but I'm at 2.36.
Any chance Sony is canceling the downloads for a bit until they've had a chance to release 4.01.
I'm having the same thing happen, says I have the latest version. Are there any sites where I can download the update and just transfer it via usb drive?

As has been reported on many gaming blogs and websites, we have temporarily taken Firmware v2.40 offline. We’ve received a limited number of calls from consumers experiencing an issue with installing the system software update on their PS3. While our consumer services department has seen a low volume of calls on this topic, we are committed to providing the PS3 community with XMB access features delivered in the v2.40 update. We are working diligently to isolate the problem for those few consumers and to identify a solution before we put the firmware back up.

I love that the blog post says nothing about the severity of the "issue." I would hardly call someone complaining about a system update bricking their $599 console an "issue." Protip for Sony: "Issues" are for magazine racks or episodes of Degrassi Junior High. A "fiasco" is what happens when you pull a stunt like this.
Regardless of the number of people experiencing it, it's kinda douchey to pull it offline without a clear explanation of what's happening, when people can expect it fixed, etc. With that said, I hope that they are able to fix it quickly, as my hunger for Stardust with custom soundtracks and trophies is nearly unbearable.
I installed mine the same night I had the system alert message for 2.40 and immediately downloaded it. Usually I like to wait these things out because there is that error factor which we all witnessed by being an early adopter.
My only problem was after it had downloaded and was supposed to restart the PS3 on it's own it ended up hanging and I had to hold the power button for 10 seconds till it turned off the system. When I restarted it the installation agreement screen came up. So I started the install and everything seems to be running fine. In Game XMB and trophies
