E3 '08: Fat Princess
If Team Fortress 2 and Pixel Junk had a baby, and that baby liked to eat cake and let 32 friends rub their dirty gamer hands all over its bottom, that baby would be Fat Princess.
Also, I'm one of the voices in the video above - that's what happens when you elbow your way into somebody else's demo. About halfway through you'll hear me start asking the questions - viva los interruptiones!
This PSN online madness revolves around a capture-the-flag-fat-princess mechanic that's simple and funny: one 16 man team must infiltrate the castle of another team, rescue your princess and carry her to safety. Along the way you'll battle enemies who are busy retrieving wood and cake from the nearby forest (where cake grows, of course) and attempt to carry out a princess who grows up to four times in size thanks to a rather unfaithful attachment to cake.
With which I sympathize enormously.
You'll also be able to change into one of five classes on the fly, depending upon your immediate goals. As the princess grows to Gilbert Grape proportions she becomes increasingly heavy, which slows down the progress of whomever is carrying her. Luckily, more than one player can help lift the princess, and additional princess-carriers are free to fight (with one hand, I'm guessing) while the initial-princess-lifter directs the group.
The wood you'll see being harvest can be used to upgrade castle defenses and the like, but the focus is definitely on scurrying around to either feed or free your princess. The demo I saw looked cartoonishly fun, didn't take itself too seriously (which would, after all, be something of an accomplishment for a game named Fat Princess), and appeared to be very, very playable.
Keep your eyes out for a Fattie near you in the first half of 2009!
